Hi everyone,

I could use some advice.

Billy has had very soft poops for about 2 days now, it's not diarhea, they are the right shape just very very soft. I've been cleaning his cage twice a day and cleaning his feet and tummy as he is walking about in it - there just seems to be so much poop!

I have slowly been trying him on small amounts of veggies recently (carrot, romaine lettuce, tiny pieces of apple) which he loves although I don't think he is used to such a varied diet - he wasn't fed very well by his previous owner and was so skinny when I got him - you could feel all his bones.

He is eating his pellets and hay fine, is bright eyed, not losing any weight and is his usual happy self but I haven't seen him drinking as much and am concerned he is going to get dehydrated with all this pooping!

I haven't given him any veggies since he started having poop problems (I thought maybe they were too watery for him) but it doesn't seem to be clearing up. Can anyone suggest anything that might settle his tummy? Or anything else that might help?

Thank you in advance

It could be the extra fibre he's getting now...Mine could fertilise a flower bed between them I'm sure! If he's active and not losing any weight and still eating fine I wouldn't worry too much. Veggies also contain water, as you pointed out, so that will no doubt explain why he hasn't felt the need to drink quite so much.

Keep an eye on him and if you are still concerned, or notice any weight loss etc then get him to a vet. x

It sounds like a common problem with 'rescue' piggies who have been fed poorly in the past. A probiotic will help, and also some rehydration fluids (like Dioralyte) to syringe to him if you feel he is risking dehydration. Just try one veg at a time, and try more nutritious ones like coriander and peppers if you can.

I would stop his veggies for about 48 hours and just keep him on his pellets and hay. Hopefully this will help :)

To be save I would recommend to take his poop to the vet. They can check in the laboratory if there is anything serious.

I always do that because I lost one of my piggies suffering from parasites in the bowel. Actuall I don't know the English word. In German it is called Kokzidiose.

Like all the previous say : The food restructuring might cause the problem.

Do you know BBB (Bird Bene Bac). This is quite good for any stomach problems.

Thanks so much for your help. Billy still isn't well. His poops are back to normal but when I was cuddling him earlier his back legs suddenly went lame. I am so worried about him... :(

I would take him to the vet then. Paralised piggies can be a result of calcium not being absorbed properly in the gut. Osteocare liquid can be good for this problem. Don't be talked into anything by your vet that you don't want to do.
