Hi everybody,
Hoping someone can give me some advice
I've noticed over the last couple of weeks or so crumbled bits of poop all over the cage, more recently there has been smears of really soft poop almost like one of the girls wiping their bottoms on everything.
Have not been overly worried cos they have all been eating well ,happy, popcorning and running around(luna is about 6 months old and her 2 daughters fizz and sooty are 10 weeks old.) weighed them today and they are all good weights.
just wondering if I can remedy the situation myself or will it require vets.
have paid out over £300 in vet fees on older girs recently.Dont get me wrong if they need to see vet will not hesitate to take them but if there is something I can do to help that would be great
Sorry to waffle on i am really bad for that:red
thanks lynne xx

hello
my guinea pig doogle has recently been back and forth to the vets due to weight lose and one of the things i mentioned to the vet was soft sticky poop, she said he wasnt eating enough hay i dont see how when they get a hay mountian each day lol but still it could be they need a little bit more roughage. keep an eye on their weights eating and drinking habits and off to vet if they are off colour. good luck

to get probiotics just put "avipro plus" or "bio-lapis sachets" into Amazon.co.uk - I find shipping there is cheaper than buying directly from the same suppliers' websites and vets usually charge extra money to make profit on any supps they sell

or you can visit local pet shops - they might have avipro plus

Hi everybody,

do you feed them greens? the vegetables have to be very fresh
what do they eat except hay?

they have plenty of good quality hay, wagg mix and about 4 diff veg per day.I try to base it generally on diet advice given on here .so not too high or low in calcium but high in vit c .red pepper tomato cucumber diff lettuce leaves, carrot broccoli, celery radish and couple times a week spinich, parsley, melon ,kale sometimes apple .

Well done for your vigilance and observation..I'm sure your "piggies poos" will be sorted soonest ;)

My advice as follows:

a) withdraw all veggies for a week
b)N Do NOT put probioitics in water.....feed pellets reyhdrated slightly with boiled water and Vit C (one ground up and powdered 500mg tablet per bowl of food - NO ZINC...Tescos are good)
c) Feed unlimilted hay
d) If you want to feed probioitics....add Biolapis powder (chemist direct or other brand/internet suppliers) to the rehydretd pellets.... or feed fibreplex (no more than 1.0ml per day per piggie for 2-3 days)
These two contain a good "bug compound" for piggies ...ie not human probioitic/acidiphilus/etc etc)

"Poo disturbance" = problem to be sorted that shouldn';t be taken lightly. Thankfully your pigies symptoms to date are not that serious...but also you recognise a potential **** and are wanting to sort it.

Gradually start re-introducing veg when poo consistency has staibilised...EITHER try carrots (but we have not had much joy with these recently for GPF members)...or maybe preferably try romaine/cos lettuce instead.....in a wheeks time

HTH..PM me if you want to discuss further or if you are at all worried

Jusr so you know - prepacked supermarket greens/fruit (spinach/lettuce/salad/fruit mix etc etc) can cause gut probs if they are not EXTREMELY FRESH (ie if you buy them, keep them no more than 24 hrs in the fridge before your piggies eat them

Please be very careful about washing thoroughly all greens/veg/fruit given to guineas...and their source.........be it supermarket/greengrocers or roadside/countryside

Not trying to be alarmist....but just trying to cover all "bases"
