hi all so mr oakley developed really bad diarrhoea yesterday, it went from one soft poop to flowing out of him within a couple of hours! So I got him up to the vet pronto she took his temp etc all is fine and she didn't know why he would be upset apart from the spring greens I gave him on Sunday which was only alittle but it was the first time he had them from me and as you know I had him from p@h who knew nothing about his history! So anyway she gave me fibreplex which has just had his third dose I have stopped his veg even though the vet told me to carry on with them is that right? After I gave him pepper yesterday things got so much worse! He is eating hay and pellets and drinking lots of filtered water. The vet said that she had seen her first case of fly strike in a piggie yesterday which was fatal so I'm on guard now checking his bottom, while I was doing that I noticed that his poop was starting to firm up and create the lovely pellet shape again not fully but it's better than the river he had yesterday! My question is does fibreplex send their pee orange? I've attached pics of his wee this morning I don't think it's blood?xx

It looks more like the wee has oxidised to me. Poor boy, hope he feels better soon. Good that the fibreplex has helped to firm things up a bit. It does sound like it was the greens if he has not had them before.

Normally i would say it would be oxidised urine when its that colour but i think seeing the pictures and the fact he has had diarrohea, i would pop a urine sample down the vet for a quick test to rule out any UTI's which may have caused his diarrohea symptoms too. If you call the vets, they should be willing for you to just drop off a sample rather than taking him down.

You say he is on filtered water- is this for bladder issues or just a personal preference?

@helen105281 it's odd I've given him Savoy cabbage before with no issues, I've racked my brains wondering what I gave him there were three things I did different
1) he had Spring greens
2) I added more meadow hay
3) he had readygrass which he has had before with no issues
I have just checked in on him and his poops are lovely sausage shapes again I will never moan about them been everywhere ever again! Such a pleasant sight! I have literally given him a slight amount of veg just so I will see how that goes before allowing Ollie back with him, I had to halve the cage for the night because poor Ollie was covered in oakleys diarrhoea but they are both trying to get back to each other.

@Adelle I just give them all filtered water I assumed it would be better for them and we all only drink it tbh, how do I collect a urine sample I've never done that?

Glad he seems to be on the mend! Hopefully your boys will be happy to be back in each others company.. Probably the sooner you can do that the better as sometimes seperating boars can upset their bond a little..

You can keep him on your lap with a little clean tub under his back end and wait for a wee.. Or place him in a basin and wait for a wee. If he is a "clean" pig and wont wee on you, wait until he lets you know he needs, put him back in his cage then sit a flat tub or lid under him when he goes to wee. Once you have the sample u can either sook it up into a clean syringe or add a lid to the tub it is in. The fresher sample the better, so probably best to discuss with your vet first wether they are happy to test it or advise you just to monitor x

Thank you for those very helpful tips I hope and prey I will not need them though :) luckily Oakley and Ollie weren't totally seperated they had just a c&c grid keeping them seperate but mainly laid side by side last night which broke my heart, they were trying to get to each other by biting the bars! I have took the divide away now and Ollie ran up to Oakley and laid down Oakley proceeded to lick Ollies ears :)) before I put them back I had Oakley on some kitchen paper to see what colour his wee is and it looked normal again! I am still keeping a very close eye on him though! Thank you for your advice, I hope fudge and crunchie are well?xx

Thats great news! Just had a thought, the urine could have been so dark if he was a little dehydrated from the diarrohea..

Fudge and Crunchie are doing good today, a little sluggish from the muggy weather if anything! Thanks for asking x

Sorry to hear about Oakley, lets hope he is over his tummy upset. Give my love to little Ollie x
