Hello All,

I'm really sorry but this could be a long one!

Piggy Marie had a spay and 2 ovarian cysts removed last October. Her large cysts were preventing her from moving and causing slight redness on her feet (she has always had very sensitive feet and it wasn't unusual to see this redness). For the first 7 days or so after her spay she was very inactive (understandably) and we were reluctant to move her too much but in sitting still her feet became VERY red, which we were given some Flamazine cream for

We then lost her beautiful cagemate and husboar, Butters, she seemed to be coping but naturally was a rid reclusive. Over this time her feet actually picked up a few scabs and her front right paw became very swollen. We had a course of anti biotics and were told to use a dilute hibiscrub solution twice a day followed by the flamazine and was given metacam to help with the pain.

However, they seemed to be getting worse - and we think the hibiscrub was reacting with her feet. Her rear feet became very red and sore and the front bad one wasn't really getting any better. We dropped the hibiscrub and instead just used warm water (cooled down from a kettle). A couple of weeks ago, despite them looking a bit better she started dragging both her feet behind her and was clearly in a lot of pain, so we worked out a larger dose of Metacam. In the past, too large a dose has caused her to have soft poos, so we increased it slowly to see how she would tolerate it. We had reached 0.28ml, we came home to find she had had terrible diarrhoea and rushed her to the vets. Annoyingly, her feet were looking the best we had seen them, so the increased Metacam had really helped with the inflammation.

We cut out veggies and she was nibbling hay and pellets but her weight was dropping. We tried Critical Care, but this also gave her soft poops even with a fairly 'dry' mix. She was weighing about 800g before the diarrhoea. On Sunday she had dropped as low as 631g. Her weight was remaining stable and she appeared to actually be eating - we were trying to use Cirtical Care only as a 'top up'. It seems that somehow she has cut herself between 2 of her toes on her 'good' front claw. This has scabbed over and is rubbing which has caused this foot to redden and swell slightly. All the time her poops have remained soft, and as her movement is limited, she ends up standing in them which is not helping her feet at all.

I have since found that crushing her pellets and mixing them up with some warm water is proving a quite effective syringe food - she actually likes it and her poops aren't quite as soft and her weight is up and has remained stable at about 670g for the past 3 days.

So thats where we are at. We are desperate to get our girl better - her hair is looking shinier so we hope we are on the right path but feel like we are going around in circles a bit.

If anyone could offer any advice, it would be most gratefully received, a few things in particular:

She isn't eating much (if any) hay, is it possible to crush this up and mix in with her syringe food?
I think that if we can get some more fibre into her, her poops will normalise.
Is it possible to give her too much syringe food?
She started with 5ml, an hour apart, 3 times a day (30ml in total). We are now up to 10ml, an hour apart, 3 times a day (60ml in total). I have read 120ml is best. Is it safe to give 20ml a time? She is willingly taking it, so will she stop when she is full?
Any tips for getting her feet better?
We really want to stop the redness. All the sores on the back feet have heeled and we want to keep it that way, but we need to reduce the inflammation.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi
I would give Rachael Mowbray at vale vets in Dursley a ring (I think you tried to see her before your piggy was spayed, but couldn't get the timings right as she lectures a lot) - not only is she great diagnosticly, she has also kept piggies herself for many years (along with her 24 other pets including her skunks) - she is always happy to talk on the phone and give recommendations ,and a consult at the practice if you need one is only about £20 incl.vat - if she isn't in the surgery ask the receptionist if she is at pet rehab down the road- she will quite often ring you later in the evening (she has rung me at 7 or 8 o'clock before now ) - she is absolutely brill with the piggies ,and will happily try alternatives before surgery etc if she thinks it has a good chance of working (never in a million years would I have thought a vet would tell me to syringe feed a piggy fizzy water 3 times a day to try shift a kidney stone instead of going down the surgey route - it worked as well!)

good luck

Sounds like your girlie has been through the wars bless her x I haven't had foot issues before but I can imagine with all that sitting in wee and poo cos her feet hurt to move could be a catch 22 situation.

I'm really sorry I can't be of any help but wanted to pass on my love to Marie and you from me and my 12 pigs x

Thanks for the replies guys.

Hi TAN - thanks for the reply, yes we did try and see Rachel before we spayed her, she sounds like a really good vet. We are very happy with our vet, although it is a long journey to see her - we have an appointment to see her on Friday, if she can't shed anymore light, I will give Rachel a call and see what she says.

Hi Briony - thanks for the love. She is such a gorgeous little girl. We had 5 boys and a girl and she is very much a daddys girl. I can't tell you how heartbreaking this is for me, I was so pleased when her spay was successful, I thought she would have been going into old(ish!) age comfortably. I do feel we have let her down.

Has anyone every tried Tramadol as a painkiller - our vet suggested that this may be an option instead of the metacam but said that it may cause constipation. We don't really want to open any more cans of worms!

Piggie Marie has been admitted to hospital tonight and we are gravely concerned for her.

The vet thinks the first foot that was infected may have spread to the bones and infected her other feet, which is why they are so sore. She has been on Septrin for about 6 weeks, which doesn't seem to have been touching it - she has done a bacteria sample for culturing, but it may prove unsuccessful due to the fact she was on Septrin. She was concerned that the infection may have spread to her organs - most likely kidney or liver and despite our efforts at syringing food and water she was still losing weight and very dehydrated.

This was also the first time we have ever discussed helping a piggie over the bridge - it was heart breaking. The vet said she can provide enough pain relief to keep her pain free and comfortable and their is a chance, albeit slim, that she can pull through. At least now she will get around the clock care and the best chance at survival. However should she not respond or the infection attack further we may have to act.

Suffice to say we are greatly upset tonight. We only lost Benny last week (very suddenly) and are still reeling from that and I also feel so guilty for Piggie Marie - we couldn't get on top of her infected foot, despite cleaning it twice a day, clean bedding daily and antibiotics.

Any healing vibes and prayers you can send for our beautiful girl are very much appreciated.

Sending you big hugs and kisses - wishing you well xx

Thank you all for you best wishes.

Unfortunately Piggie Marie deteriorated today - she was spitting out all syringe feed and her temperature was so low it wasn't registering on the thermometer. The vet called us so we could have one last hug with her and then we let her go.

We are heartbroken to have lost her - there aren't words to describe the pain we are feeling.

Sleep tight our little princess, we will always love you. x

Really sorry to read that you have lost your special beautiful girl. *hugs*

RIP Marie
