Morning all

Posting on behalf of my sister-in-law

She has two guinea pigs who are just over two years old

Hutch has got diarrhoea, is not eating or drinking, just generally sitting about not doing much :( he also seems to be struggling to balance his back end when he is walking and tends to lean against the side of the cage when he is sitting? his head is not tilted which made me steer away from a stroke though not too sure. My sister-in-law says his right ear has like gone into the side of his head ?/

I wonder if he may have an ear infection when his balance is being affected though before I knew about the balance and ear thing I did think he was the same as Jules (one of our piggles) and perhaps needed wormed.

he is booked into the vets this afternoon but was wondering if anyone could offer any advice please?

Thanks muchly

It sounds like ear infection; and diarrhea/not eating is never a good sign!

Make sure that Hutch is getting some water (syringed) to keep him hydrated until he can be seen by a vet. She can mush pellets with a bit of slightly cooled down boiled water and try to feed him that.

Thanks Wiebke

I have text my sister to ask her to do this until she gets Hutch to the vets this afternoon

Will keep you posted how he gets on

Hutch now slightly floppy and leaning to one sid to gain balance against side of cage

Could it be a stroke after all?

I have told my sister to phone the vet now to see if he can be seen earlier or give any advice as Hutch is making high pitched squeeking when he was put back in the cage

Any help gratefully received :( x

Hutch has been taking into the vets to stay there for observation until a vet comes back following visits

My sister is panicking so trying to keep her as calm and reassured as possible so all your vibes and advice are really helping, thanks guys x

Definitely wise to have him seen as an emergency. He needs plenty of fluids at the least, the vet should be giving a good amount of SubQ fluids/by injection. The 'imbalance'/weakness/floppiness could be related to the diarrhoea i.e. loss of fluids has left him feeling very unstable. To me, at the moment, based on what you have said, I am wondering about general weakness as opposed to loss of balance.

An infection may well be causing the diarrhoea, but it could easily be a gastric infection and it's simply the effects of that which have left him wobbly.

I do hope he'll be ok, update us when you can. xx

Thank you so much Laura

I'm glad he is at the vets at least they can attend to him and get him sorted out quickly

Will keep you posted as to how he is getting on xx

Hutch is being kept in overnight so the V.E.T can keep an eye on him.

They have given him fluids, steroids and antibiotics but still don't know what it is that is wrong with him :(

They say he seems comfortable in himself and he is in the right place to be looked after

When my mother-in-law took him in they said that he didn't look unwell but as I said to her piggies are extremely good at hiding illnesses and his condition came on suddenly in the last 24 hours

Morning everyone

Just to let you know thatlittle hutch passed away through the night at the vets :( he was having fits that's as much as we know was too hard to ask anymore questions just now - his cagemate starskey has said goodbye and he will be laid to rest later on today

Rest in peace little ginger pig hutch popcorn free and go and meet all the other lovely piggies already at the bridge x

I'm so sorry, it sounds like Hutch was very much loved, what a shame he didn't make it. Your SIL did all she could though, got him to the vets and it sounds like they did their best.

Rest well, dear Hutch. xx

So sorry to hear that he passed away. You and your sister in law did everything that you possibly could for him x

Thanks from starsky

Hi all thanks very much for all the advice and good vibes that you sent for my little bro hutch. Its funny cause i dont have to fight over the frut and veg for the time being. Hopefully i will be getting another cage mate soon as it is lonely but my mum leaves the t.v on for company. :))
