Hi, my guinea pig is making a popping sound when he breathes. He’s been with us for a couple of months now, and has been making this noise as long as I can remember. We took him to the vet for an unrelated issue a few months back, and the vet had a good listen to him and didn’t seem at all concerned..

But the noise doesn’t sound normal, and he does it more often than not - particularly when you pick him up and he gets stressed out. I’ve tried to google what t could be, but other than the popping/tapping/clicking noise, he has no symptoms - no mucus, normal amount of sneezing, gaining weight well, eating, drinking, popcorning around... the only thing is that he chokes a lot (sounds a bit like a cough) but I think that’s because he’s still very skittish and just wants to eat as quickly as possible.

We’ve change hay multiple times, and they’re on fleece bedding, so I don’t think it’s either of those.

What could this be? And is it worth taking him to the vet?

Any unusual breathing noise that persists more than a couple of hours needs checking by a vet. Also probably worth getting the vet the check his back teeth, as the description you give could possibly be misaligned or overgrown teeth rubbing together.
Only a hands on examination by a vet experienced with piggies can say for sure!
