My first guinea pig was Poppy. Being completely honest she was an impulse by from a pet store. I say that because I had never really given getting a guinea pig much thought, whenever I had seen them in pet stores they generally looked petrified sat in the house, or under a mound of hay trying to hide. But as I peered in Poppy’s cage there was this little Pig happily sat at the food bowl, and gave me the once over looking in my direction before going back to the food. As you do I said “hello†in a soppy voice. To my amazement Poppy lifted her head in my direction and sniffed with her nose then decided to wander over and lick my fingers which I had held up to the bars. The assistant asked if I wanted any help? At the time I said “just looking thanks,†and then discussed with my husband some more about buying a guinea pig, and what I would need to house her, all the while little Poppy was watching me with interest and just pulling on my heart strings to give her a home. The assistant then asked if I wanted to hold her, of course I agreed and that was it Poppy was coming home with me. Then I was scouring all the forums for information on housing and caring for a guinea pig, I already knew about the vitamin C and I must admit when I first saw Poppy popcorning I thought she was having a fit, until I read it was a sign she was happy and excited. Anyway I could go on and on, but I will try and keep it short and here are a few pics below of Poppy, PS if anyone has any idea’s of what coat type she is I would like to know? Her eyes are dark the flash made them red!

Rose I only bought last weekend as a companion for Poppy, I have no idea how old she is, but judging by her size she is quite young, I even wonder if the owners should have sold her so young, although she is eating fine. Rose I found in a private add on gumtree. When I got there it was a granddad who’s son had bought two guinea pigs for his daughter, and they breed. The granddad said “I don’t know much about them but I am left looking after them.†He had about five hutches and runs in his garden with same sexed pigs in them; it was pretty much help yourself, as the son couldn’t be bothered to get out off bed to deal with me. They all looked well looked after and they definitely needed to re-home quite a few, I wouldn’t say they were breeding for profit or even planned on them breeding, they only charged me $10 dollars for my pig. Rose is in quarantine and I am currently treating her with Ivomec for any mites, I would say there is a good possibility of mites because as soon as I left their garden something had bit my leg three times in that short period I was there, unfortunately the bugs love me, lol. I think Rose is a Abyssiain but then I guess she is very young and could change a lot, her eyes are pink and red., at the moment she is too shy to know her personality and I don’t think she had much human contact, but she will nibble a bit of veggie from my hand now where as before the sight of my hand frightened her. I am sure she will be fine in time. Anyway here are a few pics of Rose.

I'm glad you got a companion, both your piggies are beautiful! Quarantine is a very good idea and Rose does look tiny. If you start a set of once a week pictures and write on her weight each time then you'll see her growing which is a fantastic memory. Thank you for the story and pigtures, they are fab.

They are both absolutely stunning x) x) Well done on Quarantine, they'll soon be together.. Looking forward to updates on your girls in the future.

They are lovely. Guinea pig mites don't bite people but that doesn't mean she is creepy crawly free. I would be careful with the Ivomec as it might be too much for her as she is so small only give it to her on consultation with a vet, there is a baby version if she has to have it.

Poppy seems to be a mixture of almost everything. Is her hair quite prickly or is it soft? She looks like she has some Abby sticky up bits and she is semi longhaired.

Just because pet shops are useless, have you taken them to the vet to double check that they are both girls? If not I would do so before introducing them.

Thank you everyone for you kind words, Sarah, Rose weighed a tiny 125g when I weighed her last Monday, Since then I can actually feel her weight gain, actually just weighed Rose right now and she is now 220 grams, so I would say gaining weight nicely.:))
piggyme, thank you for your concern with using Ivomec, I am aware it can be fatal if too much is used and it is normally used for sheep and cattle. I dosed according to Rose's weight and not just a wild guess, that was almost a week ago and have had no ill effects, she is due another dose tomorrow as mites lay eggs and Ivomec will not kill eggs, you have to kill the mites thoughout the whole cycle.
I did keep Poppy's story a little shorter as I wanted to leave out some of the not so nice part of her story, that was when I first brought her home I thought she was ever so skinny and I thought diet and got her on a good diet, buying best of quality of everything. after watching her I noticed she scratched alot. as she was still adapting to her ner home I had initially left her be, in the way of handling, after her scratching I thought I had better catch her up and have a look through her fur. Poppy's skin just behind her head was alot shorter than anywhere else, and quite red looking (and I am not talking about the bald patches behind the ears, lol) and there was also a scabby lump, after reserch and thinking it was probably mites I treated with Ivomec 3 doses in total. Her skin is now a healthy pink and the fur is growing, I am not sure if her fur will always be shorter there or if it will reach the same length as the rest of her coat. Not only that, she was also quite matted around her back end and I had to cut out quite a few knots in her fur and some were really tight to her skin, I bathed her also, that was before the Ivomec, sorry telling the story a bit backwards, luckily we have Ivomec in the fridge as my husband keeps finches and Ivomec is just one of the treatments used for general parasite treatment which he can buy in a bottle at the weekly finch meetings.
Sexing, well I have done alot of reserch on that to, ok I hope I dont get told off but I was amazed at after looking at detailed images of the male and female pigs parts that the male pe*is looked very human in shape, colour, lol, other animals dont look that way, lol. I have checked both my girls they are both clear Y shapes and even applying a little pressure I certainly dont get anything pop out, lol. Even very young male pigs clearly pop out, but I will check Rose again after quarintine just to be safe. Vets are not always that good at sexing animals either, I once had a Rabbit which I bought as a male they were a very good pet shop, they mainly delt with birds but also had bunnies they had bred birds all their lives, my husband knew them through the bird side, and the guys new wife was into bunnies and so they started selling a small stock of specialized rabbit breeds, they told me it was a male, I took him to the vets for a general check up and jabs and my vet said no its a girl. Months on I was having problems with aggression with this Rabbit and the vet said it was hormones and to get it neutered and so I agreed. The day the rabbit went in the vet phoned before the op and said your little girl is a he do you still want to go ahead? I did. But the pet shop was right all along, I am not saying that is always the case but just saying sometimes the vets arn't that good either, especially with small animals, lol.:(|)
