Hi

I used to live in Portsmouth and in the park in the middle there was a big avery style thing with a section full of guinea pigs. My wife and I used to enjoy sitting down round there and watching them run around. I was just wondering if it's still there and how they are doing scince I moved back up north.

That was before I had any of my own and now I've got 4 of them and always on the lookout for more. I do enjoy those piggies.

Which part of Portsmouth is this? I grew up in that area and don't remember anything like this.

It was in the park opposite HMS Nelson on the main drag into the town centre. I forget the name of the park. They were always clean and well fed and left to live a natural life by the looks of it. Every city should have an outdoor guinea pig managerie.

Hull has outdoor piggies in a park but they have no cover and they are all boys so they fight. I don't like how they are kept but it is better than when they were breeding them too much. Don't know what I can do to change how they are kept, the pecocks come in and live with them and steal the food and sometimes the crows kill them. What laws are there to protect piggies like this?

The animal welfare Act 2006 coveres this under the housing and companionship issues as well as prevent injury.

Hi, it was victoria park and yes it is still there with the guinea pigs, rabbits, birds, chickens and turtles. They have also done the park up with a large childrens area. I use to live next to the park so my children use to go there about 3 times a week. I live in cosham now.

Hi, do you mean the ones in East Park? I had a bit of a heated conversation with the manager there about them. As far as I know they're still breeding them, and last time I went they were giving the babies away! I was horrified. and had to say something. I think they have shelter outside though they can go into the back of the stables. I'm going again this weekend, so I'll check it out. Well I'll prime my 9 yo daughter with questions and make it look innocent.:))

My OH used to work there (not in the animal section) and has forbidden me from causing a scene when he's there with me.

I don't think they knowingly neglect them, it's just ignorance on the park keepers part really.

It is about as close to nature without much human intervention possible in a park in the middle of pompey but when I used to go a few years ago they did all look healthy and happy. There were lots of hutches and boxes, tunnels and stuff. There were always fresh veg and hay so I certainly don't think they were miss treated. They just lived how nature intended I suppose. I do hope they are all still ok.

Yeah it is the ones in East Park. I had a good long chat with them too but they basically ignored me, they said how they kept theirs was better than keeping them in a hutch with fleece under foot like mine cuz their way is more natural. In the wild piggies don't have their food stolen by peacocks. All the ones out in the open are boys and they keep girls in the stables to breed from so they have "fresh supplies" after winter. Apparently the boys are all put in another stable in winter and the ones that fight are "taken out". It is better than last time I went a couple of years ago when girls and boys were all outside together. I asked what happenens to the babies and did they sell them to pet shops or something so they are not over run and I was told "the crows keep the numbers down" :)>>>
