what ear drops can be used to treat an inflamed ear canal when ear mites are present and poss ear infection?

ive treated with ivermectin but could do with drops incase of poss infection dont want to go down the baytril route so could do seeing what drops are good?

I know Otodex drops are recommended (by Peter Gurney) for ear mites but I'd be very careful what you use if you suspect an infection as well. PG mentions prescription only antibiotic ear drops in the case of ear infection, so you may not necessarily also need to give Baytril or other ABs orally. I've used Surolan ear drops (for dogs & cats) in the past, but I'd seek expert advice before trying anything.

Hope the poor piggy gets better soon x

Another thing about Surolan drops..... As they contain steroids, some people give them a wide berth (I didn't realise this when I used them). I'm not sure what alternatives there are though, hopefully someone else can advise further x

All I can say to help is what I myself have recently been prescribed for my pigs by my exotics vet: (my first ever case of ear mites :red)

a) to clear ear mites - fortnightly injections x 3 (but restricted in efficacy if there is a load of ear wax/gunk) - doramectin inections - destomax. This is brill and has less possible side effects then ivermectin.....

PLUS for the wax....

b) every other week x 3 - ear drops - Zirbec epi-otic

In tandem, much less harsh to piggies than ivermectin and otodex........

Forgot to add - if infection can be seen in ear - ie pus etc - then also septrin as antibioitic - with maybe also either metacam daily (or a one-off steroid injection if it;s very irritating)

I always learn something from you Pebble, very useful info. :)

Surolan is the first thing that came to mind for me on reading your post Claire, BUT I have never used them on my piggies.

Hi Laura

Surolan have used - it's a great topical treatment for piggieswith ringworm/fungal for "the odd patch"...and saves the rest of the herd from being dosed with oral griseofulvin (not so good)

For mites = wouldn;t count on,it alone.....it's not got the appropriate inesecticides in
