Hello everyone!

I noticed just a few minutes ago that my poor girl, Momo, is exhibiting some signs of an ovarian cyst. Her hair is balding a bit on her abdomen (no signs of any sort of skin issues either) and her nipples are pretty crusty and swollen. She seems alright other than that and is eating and drinking just fine. I’ll be calling her vet on Monday when they open back up but have honestly been panicking a bit and find everyone on here usually gives out such great information!

I am mostly posting just to see if anybody has had experience with a spay in an older pig and what that recovery process looks like. She just turned 5 a little under a month ago and has been in very good health throughout her life. The only issues she’ve had is haypoke because of eating some lower quality hay and she had a UTI back in January that was resolved after a course of antibiotics. I know all pigs probably heal differently, but that is just for a bit of context! I’m very worried about what her prognosis may be and want to be realistic on what to expect following her appointment.

Hi

I've had several 5 years old sows fully spayed but I have access to a very good operating vet so their recovery was totally problem-free. It very much depends on the operating vet and the recovery nursing team. It is still a major operation.

Unless there is a problem with the womb itself, the preferred operative method is now generally an ovariectomy from the back instead of from the belly (removal of just the ovaries with smaller incisions).

Here is some more information:

I hope that this helps you.

Hello, this is a late reply but I just wanted to thank you so much for the resources! She got spayed earlier today and has been doing good; eating and drinking and moving around a little! I’ve bookmarked the links and they were great for preparing what I would need for ber recovery :) Thank you again!
