I think my 2 year old Ginny has ovarian cysts. She started behaving hormonally a few months ago, chasing, rumble strutting and mounting her sister.
I took her to the vet who couldn't feel anything and since she had no other symptoms we decided to wait and watch.
A month on, Ginnys behaviour has calmed down, but has now got thinning hair on both sides and has put on 100g in 4 weeks (after a previously stable weight).
Yesterday she started looking uncomfortable, like she just couldn't settle. She has been biting their plastic litter tray, and biting her back foot, which I have taken to mean something hurts?
I felt her tummy and it was soft but didn't feel normal, can't quiet put my finger on what was different.
I'm going to make an appointment at the vets, but want to ask you guys about options first.
The vet offered to x ray her last time, is this just as good as ultrasound (I had been previously told they don't have ultrasound).
The vet also talked about the implant, but I've read this is not very effective?
I'm debating whether to try injections or just go straight for a spay? I'm going to ask if anyone at the vets have done flank surgery.

Have just had the exact same thing with my Robyn and she is a similar age too. Been hormonal for a while, then I noticed that her hair had started to thin and she was shifting about trying to get comfy. Took her to Simon Maddock who suggested a spay though he did give us the choice of injections instead. The op was done almost a week ago and he found large fluid filled cysts plus the small ones that cause the hormonal behaviour. He didn't x-ray but that may show larger cysts. The small ones would not be visible though. How experienced is your bet with spaying?

From what I remember, and we are going back a few years now, my late bumble had an ultrasound to check rather than an x-ray. As mentioned by Helen I have heard of injections being successful for hormonal cysts so depending on what's going on in there this might be an option for you. My bumble didn't have many signs of cysts, she didn't become more aggressive, there was no thinning of hair. The only symptom she had was sitting in her own urine too much and the night before I noticed she really objected to having her right side touched. When she was scanned she was found to have sizeable cysts and went for an emergency spay

I need to quiz my vet about how many spays she's done. Thanks

It was £136 including the follow up appointment and meds. It does vary from vet to vet though. This one used to regularly spay all the sows for a rescue so am not sure if his price is lower than some due to how experienced he is (means they aren't under anaesthetic as long).

I would at her age personally spay her. But i would get her ultrasounds to check to ensure they are cysts first. I would also consider ensuring you use a vet who had spayed before. They are not the easiest of operations so I would highly recommend a guinea pig savvy or exotics vet to do this for a good result. As above, spaying here in London at a specialist is about £150-250 approximately.

Thank you we use Simon which is why i was interested :) he tends to bw more expensive in general but i guess thats all the experience. My local vet is very cheap foe consultation compared so wondered what his costs maybe for that so thank you ita a great help!

That's great you use Simon. Robyn has bounced back really well.

Well the vet couldn't find any cysts but did find out Ginny has spinal pain. Poor baby is on metacam, with an x ray to follow soon.
She has been doing this manic biting thing when I stroke her, but I thought she was just a bit annoyed. Turns out it meant ouch get off that hurts. Feel so guilty now.
