So I'm having problems again :(. Pebbles is bleeding from her vaginal area again, there is blood on some of the bedding/hay and it's also on her nose where she had been cleaning herself.

She has had an xray and ultrasound and her uterus was visable on the xray which leads me to think its inflamed/swollen.. The vet mentioned spaying but said at the that stage (a month ago) she wouldn't reccomend it due to the risks, but seeing as she is still bleeding I would think that's the only option.

Not only that, our Pringles also needs hormone treatments for her ovarian cyst and Porche needs antibiotics for a possible UTI/cystitis. I am so worried about costs, the spay itself, how she will cope etc.. she is 3 years and 4 months old.

Does anyone have experience with spaying and the outcomes? :(

I have always had excellent results with spaying, and no post spay issues whatsoever, but all ops have been carried out by Simon Maddock at The Cat and Rabbit Care Clinic here in Northampton. Simon is probably the most experienced vet in the country at doing guinea pig spays, due to him routinely spaying all the guinea pigs for Rabbit and Guinea Pig Welfare.

I am really sorry that you are having such a hard time with your piggies right now. It never rains but it pours :(

3 years and 4 months is still relativley young for a guinea pig so age is on her side if you needed to operate.

I think that what you need to do is have a good and honest chat with your vet and see what she suggests. Also mention how worried you are regarding the cost and see if they will offer you a payment plan. My vets do not do this as they have been let down many times before but I know that they do in extreme circumstances.

My Erin showed signs of having phometra last year but when my vet opened her up to spay her, it turned out that it was in fact her bladder that was causing the problems. She had a huge amount of sludge and an inflamed bladder and instead of being spayed, she had a full bladder flush.

Unfortunately Erin also had a ruptured eye at the same time and we had to let her go as my vet felt she wasn't strong enough to withstand an eye removal so soon after the bladder flush. She was very poorly :(

There are many members on here who have had successful spay operations but I think speaking to your vet is a must so you know where you stand.

All the best x

I am very sorry; it is not an easy decision, and a lot depends on how much you trust your vet.

My underweight Cariad needed an emergency spay due a grossly enlarged, fluid and lump-filled borderline pyometric womb (with some nasty looking ovarian cysts thrown in) only half a year after a major bladder stone op. That was nearly a year ago, and she is still here.

I was lucky to have both ops performed by Simon Maddock, and Cariad made a very smooth recovery in both cases.

Thank you all, if she was spayed then she would be done by Molly Varga at Cheshirepet in Holmes Chapel. I wouldn't ever send her to be done at a vet that wasn't piggie savvy as I am aware of the high risk factors involved.

This may sound like a silly question, but what is included in a payment plan? Basically, what is it? Haha!

Fortunately Pebbles is still eating, drinking, pooing and weeing fine and seems fine in herself apart from being quiter than usual. The worry just adds up what with Pringles and Porche being poorly and needing treatment aswell.

Such a palava!

I have heard lots of good things about Molly Varga, so she will be in safe hands there!

You will have to talk with the vet clinic about how to pay back the cost of the operation and follow-up consultation.

I have worked out it would most likely cost £200+ including consultations to sort out all 3.. if so, thats £500 spent since January! Consultations alone with Molly are £30 which is so offputting but needs must. When the girls were xrayed she only charged us for 1 as we explained how we'd just spent a fortune on the rabbits xrays and dental too, so hopefully she will be understanding.

Not on benefits, my dad has a pretty good wage but he is at risk of losing his job due to the firm closing down and him and my mum are always talking about money troubles etc which is why I am worried incase they refuse to help out:(

My birthday is in June and I will be getting money from family but that's too long to wait! I am sure we will sort something out, thank you:luv:

A payment plan is essentially where you would arrange an agreement with your vet where you would pay the fees off over an agreed amount of time rather than all in one go.

You would have to speak with your vet though to see if they would be prepared to do this for you.

I thought so, will definitely have a chat with them. I am hoping all works out, it's horrible when everything happens at once!

Little update - my mum has said we will have to take Pebbles (who is bleeding) and Porche (with the UTI) at the same time and then Pringles with the cyst afterwards as that is the only affordable way It can be done. Pringles seems ok in herself and the cyst is only on her right ovary therefore the vet isnt so worried about her just yet.

I am so happy my parents are helping me out :)
