Possible ringworm...?

Hi I am the guinea pig mother of a three-year old Texel (ish) boar. The 'ish' is because he seems to be a bit of everything... About a year ago he showed the first symptoms of scratching, particularly around the legs and hindquarters, as well as biting and tearing at his fur along the chest and rump. I treated him with Ivermectin from Beaphar as I saw very small, almost like dark dust, static mites. This provided some relief, then the itching came back. I took him to the vets last winter and they also prescribed Ivermectin. It had no effect.

I haven't taken him to the vets again because I'm a bit short on money at the moment, our vets aren't that great with small animals, and I thought maybe the itchiness was due to his thick fur causing a build of grease and dead skin, so upped his VitC and brushed more regularly (but the brushing clearly hurt). I now realise I should have spent the extra few and just got it sorted then , as now he can't be stroked, and has a crusty bald patch behind his left (pink) ear, and strand of hair attached to tiny clumps of dandruff would sometimes come off when brushed, the edge of his ear is slightly crusty too, and he has other bald bits on his rump where he's pulled at the fur, and I think he may now be losing weight. But he still doesn't look like he has mange as there are no sores and the baldness isn't that extensive, but I am wondering if it's fungal now. I'm treating him for ringworm and will disinfect the hutch with White Vinegar spray and disinfectant( Beaphar). But I'm wondering if any of you guys have experienced a similar thing and if so, how you went about relieving it? The little guy has been put through anti-parasite baths and sprays, but still nothing, but clearly this issue can't continue.

(He is a solo guinea unfortunately, living in my room)

Thanks so much, I will try and get some pictures.

Welcome to the forum.

Please do not treat on spec. You say you are treating him for ringworm, but you haven’t taken him to the vet for confirmation. This is not a safe thing to do - you may be inadvertently making it worse. Only a vet can diagnose and prescribe the correct treatment.
Unfortunately pet shop treatments (such as the beaphar one) are not strong enough to properly treat the problem, leaving it liable to come back. They are not prescription strength and in some cases can do more harm than good. Plus without a proper vet diagnosis, you don’t know that you are in fact treating the right illness.

Please be aware that all guinea pigs have a bald spot behind their ears.

Please take him to a vet for proper diagnosis and treatment. This is going to be the only way the problem will be resolved.

Hi!

Unfortunately we cannot help you without a hands-on vet diagnosis and just relying on your word as we may be just contribute to your piggy's suffering if you treat for the wrong thing. No online place is able or qualified to replace a vet trip; there are no quick and easy shortcuts.

We have seen too often the suffering of incorrectly home treated piggies. The irony is usually that people who think they are taking a shortcut with cheap pet shop products end up spending more money by the time they are finally seeking vet care with a much more advanced case and after lots of unnecessary discomfort for their pets than if they had opted for correct good quality treatment first.

We CAN support you with tips on what you can do at home to prevent further spread and reinfection once we know what you are actually dealing with and once you are on vet strength medication to help you make the best of it and get past your problem once and for all.

Please also start saving up for a vet fund as part of the weekly/monthly maintenance cost, so you can have your piggies seen and treated whenever needed. Illness and emergency never happen at a convenient time but can quickly get costly - and piggies don't have the body mass or the slow metabolism to wait for long. Vet fees make the biggest budget post in any pets life but most new owners are not aware of this.

:agr: with all the above. My one big thing is this. Once you know what he has (vet visit) and are treating him, then seriously think about getting him a cage mate. Piggies aren’t made to live alone. The best way is to take him to a rescue that does boar dating - once he’s recovered from whatever ailment he has. The cage would have to be 150x 60cm.

Please think seriously about that. Also, let us know where you’re located so we can help you find a cavy savvy vet.

Hi thanks so much for your replies and advice! There was a feeling that I should go to the vet but have not (unfortunately) had good experiences with our vets regards small animals, however I think I will take him to the new Pets At Home vets and see what happens 🤞Thanks very much for stopping me from self-medicating him 😅 I had heard that the over-counter treatments weren't great...I will try and report back with a diagnosis.
Yes I would love it if he had a cage mate, as I have heard the horror stories of depression and increased susceptibility to illness loneliness causes 🙁however I made the error of buying the last boy in a litter, and after futile efforts to persuade my parents, gave up on the idea and he's now been alone for three years, so I'm unsure if it's too late too get him paired with another 😕? It's a classic example of a numpty getting pets when they don't have the means I'm afraid ( but I I have learnt from that mistake now...)
I will definitely put aside something each month for future illnesses though!
Thanks very much again, and will hopefully update on Timmy in a bit ☺

It is definitely not and is never too late to get him a friend! Please do look into it.

Great! I'm located in somerset England, so if there is a boar dating place that might be an option...? ( If parents are willing 😬)

I'm not sure how experienced the vets in PAH are. Let me see if I can find one closer to you. You can also have a look in the Recommended Guinea Pig Vets and see if there's one there.

As @Piggies&buns buns said, it's never too late. Please speak to your parents. Make it clear they had a responsibility to take care of the piggies' mental and health wellbeing. I know he's been alone for three years, but nothing can replace the company of another piggy. And no matter how much you play with him or spend time with him, it can never be the same. You'd be surprised how much his character develops if he had a cage mate :)

Our Vets4Pets next to PAH are very good, they arent actually employed by the store they are independant vets who just rent a franchise and in exchange do the health checks for PAH animals so are often very experienced with guinea pigs and common pet shop illnesses like ringworm- ours and many others are on the recommended vet locator.
But I agree your piggy is never too old to find a friend, and many common skin problems like mites and ringworm can be triggered or made worse by stress- and sadly a lone piggy is usually a stressed piggy, they have evolved to live in herds, and even the very few who dont find a compatible cage mate benefit hugely from having a companion living next door so they arent completely alone x

My bad @PigglePuggle.

@lizzie01 call on Monday and see when you can have him seen.
No its a good point @Siikibam that on the forum we generally distrust pet shops with good reason, and not all vets linked to PAH are good. But some are and if they regularly treat and patch up pet shop piggies they can be very experienced- our vet is next door to a PAH that only sells the "preloved" or often neglected and not loved at all pets so they are very very good because returned unwanted pets are often the sick ones sadly :(

You have a good point re vets who are regularly treating sick piggies from pet shops. I think there’s an element of ‘can’t be bothered’ when it comes to those returned pets. Partly neglect, or they fall ill and the owners aren’t willing to pay the vet fees. A sad state of affairs but it will keep happening until pet shops aren’t allowed to sell piggies/other small animals.

Out of curiosity, are other small animals and rabbits returned regularly?
