My 11month old piggie isnt well. Her neck seems twisted to the side. Took her to the vet who said either ear infection, possible stroke or neurological.

She's been on the antibiotics for 4 days now and no change which **** means its not an ear infection.

Today she been in her little bed all day and hasnt even wanted to eat her favorite fruit. Got her out for a cuddle and she just sat there. Shes normally first at the bowl & running around the floor.

Its so sad, and just wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this and what to expect.

I had a pig who became unwell first by leaning to one side & then losing his balance & then not getting up. Like your pig he was treated with anti-biotics for 10 days with no effect. He went off his food & stopped leaving the cage. Sadly though he never recovered & died 10 days later with me.

I am sorry about my experience as it doesn't have the outcome you may want to hear, but it can happen. :(

Have you taken your piggie back to the vet for advice / check-up? It may be worth changing anti-biotics, although this is not guarenteed to work.

The only thing I can suggest is until you get back to the vet, is to give your piggy lots & lots of TLC (tender loving care). Hold her, love her, syringe water / feed pureed food as tolerated & make sure she is comfortable, although I am sure your little piggy will know you love her.

Sorry this may not be much help but just before Christmas one of my pigs had a stroke. I actually caught him having it and it was distressing. He was running around in a circle with his head bent over to one side but the most distressing was his eyes. They were darting back and forth and like going in circles and he clearly was blind... couldn't see a thing. On the way to the vets I thought he had died. Anyway the vet confirmed he'd had a stroke and administered a steroid injection. We were told to keep him comfortable and warm and on his own in a darkened room and see how he got on. He was still blind. The next day you would hardly believe anything had ever happened to him .... his eyes were still a bit dodgy but all in all a good result I would say. He has since made a full recovery. I know I am very lucky as the vet did say it could go either way especially as he is quite old (5 years).

I think the steroid was to help reduce inflammation in the brain. But I know nothing and had to guided by the vets opinion which in this case worked perfectly.

Really hope you get some better luck with your piggy. Maybe its worth mentioning the steroid I got to your vet (and also bear in mind that it could be totally unsuitable for your pig) like I said I am not a vet and only retelling my own experience.

Whilst a stroke diagnosis may be possible your pig is somewhat of a young age for this. It could be an ear infection which is not responding because of either an inappropriate antibiotic and/or the wrong dose. Yet again it could be a strained muscle. [*]If the pig is otherwise fit[/*] wait and watch for a day (or two). Some pigs do develop a twisted neck for no apparent reason and sometimes the problem resolves itself after a period of time ie weeks or months. You could administer Junior Calpol, 0.2ml by mouth, this would give pain relief, which in the case of a pulled muscle would be more than adequate treatment. One dose per day for three days is both effective and [*]safe[/*].
 
Our Dylan had a stroke whilst in rescue due to stress - he was badly bullied by other pigs. He was also less than a year old, so whilst it may be considered rare to have younger pigs with strokes, it's not impossible.

If it helps, Dylan was left with a horribly wonky neck, and we were concerned about his eyesight - we were informed that he may need ongoing vet treatment and may not last very long. This was over two years ago and the only thing (touch wood) that we have had to take him to the vets for in the last two years was to check up on a sebaceous cyst. His head tilt has evened out wonderfully and he is one of the most relaxed and boldest piggies we have. So it can work out okay :)

I hope she's feeling better soon. As mentioned in the link that Boureki has posted Peter Gurney says that strokes don't usually happen again in piggies but that the head tilt may be a permanent thing.
