Hello fellow piggy lovers,

One of our girls has just had an operation to remove an absess from under her chin. Pleased to report she is doing well and tucking into her dinner with vigour.

We are keeping her in a cage on her own at the moment, but I am conscious about her being apart from her friends (two girls and a boy) for too long because of problems re-socialisiong them, but as its an absess I wasn't sure if she needed to stay apart from them until the wound is healed?

Any advice please?

Thanks :-)

Sorry to take a while to get back to you on this.

There are of course two schools of thought, you can either keep separate but neighbouring her friends, or not separate at all. I've tended not to separate but I kept a very close eye on those pigs to ensure the others did not show any interest in the wound.

Do you know if her abscess was lanced and drained, or was it actually removed?

Last summer one of my pigs had two surgeries due to abscess and dental problems... my original plan was to separate them post-op, but since they both went crazy looking for each other as soon as I brought the sick one back home from the vet, we ended up putting them back in together. I asked the vet and he said as the abscess she had was not contagious the only reason to separate them was if the other pig was gnawing at her incision or otherwise bothering her, and that never happened. HTH!
