Hi guys

Been lurking a little while and reading but desperate to hear your advice and opinions on my little Duncan pig

Duncan is about two years old abysinnian rescue pig. I have hsd him 2-3 months. He has a good diet since being with me and until now had been absolutely fine. Cheeky chappy

Trouble started around 2-3 weeks ago when my partner came home and he was off his bag legs. Took him to vets immediately. Vet gave him cat/guinea pig metacam and baytril. He weed so he took a urine sample. Next appointment the following day I saw a different vet who wasn't overly positive but I wasn't particularly happy with what she said as other than his legs he was happy eating and toiletting etc. Urine sample looked cloudy and aparently was dilute with crystals but couldn't feel a stone. As be improved his urine also went back to normal

Went to a different vet and saw one who specialised in exotics. He was lovely. We went up to dog metacam on a higher dose and he advised drop baytril as no need for it. He checked urine results and seeing as his urine was normal and he wasn't symptomatic wasn't overly worried. I gave him oestocare and 4joints as recommended by CCT and in a few days he was back to walking.

He's been walking now about 2 weeks but in oticed he seemed uncomfortable so back to the vet today. Vet advised he felt a little bloated but nothing serious however he is quite sensitive and he's abit of a wimp so gave him an injection of vetergesic and sent me home with some more to give sublingually and metacam and ranitadine.he's stoll eating and passing droppings but hasn't really been drinking much

AAnything else I could be doing?anyone experienced similar?

So worried about him

I can’t help but one of the health experts will be along.
I just wanted to welcome you to the forum and assure you of my support.
It’s so worrying when a piggy is sick.
You’re doing everything right in ensuring Duncan has the best vet treatment.
Holding you in my thoughts

Thankyou so much! Had a really rough year and these little guys have helped me so much! Fingers crossed he will be okay x

Quick morning update

He definately feels alot more normal in his tummy this morning. Still feels like a little but more to shift. He's had his meds and is munching away x

Hi and welcome!

I am sorry about the bloating; it is either vetergesic or whatever has caused the sudden back leg paralysis that has also caused the bloating. Lack of mobility/paralysis can also affect gut motility.

You may find these two threads here interesting in case problems come back. How piggy savvy is your vet?

Thankyou. He walks quite nicely now when he wants to or thinks he's not being watched. He's got me round his finger and thinks it he doesn't walk he gets more fuss. Unfortunately i have a WiFi cam on him which catches him out

My latest issue is he seems adamant he doesn't need to drink.. Any ideas?

If he is getting enough fluid from his support feed, then he won't need any extra. The need to drink comes before the need to eat; so if he is still eating, he won't be thirsty.

Thanks that makes me feel so much better.

You may want to review whether your diet is actually containing too much fluid. Over 80% should be hay while veg should only make about 10%. Too much veg in the diet can cause digestive problems.

As long as your boy's weight is stable, I would not worry.

Sorry for the long time between updates. I picked up a new long awaited cage mate for him at the weekend. He was very much over due one but I wanted to make sure his health was stable before another pig was involved.he seems a lot happier. I've taken him off metacam and he's actually started drinking more and seems a lot happier. Still getting a few poops building up in his anal sac occasionally but when they are there he let's me just massage them free so no worry to him x
