I know that complete recovery takes a while and they usually hit rock bottom 24-60 hours after surgery, but I just have some food/digestion questions! Harriet was spayed yesterday and has been recovering rather well in all if I'm honest, she came back from the vet very tired of course but was eating and nibbling lots of food. Then this morning she was very depressed and barely eating, her poops were very small although there were still lots of them around the cage which is a good thing.

As she seemed depressed and eating very little I decided to put her back in with her 3 friends and get her back into her normal routine that she's used to, this worked a treat and since she has been back with them she has really perked up and is pretty much back to normal, she has lots of energy, very active, actually being rather naughty with her medicine and cuddle time, she's more interested in playing, and she's eating and pooping lots, they're also a normal shape and size now.

I just wanted to ask if the worst is over now and she should continue to get better? Is it likely she will go back to being depressed like she was earlier or is she more likely to keep improving now? Obviously I'm still checking on her every 5 seconds and probably driving her crazy! :)

I would maybe keep a close eye on her weight/eating in the next few days, step in with some top up syringe feeding if necessary :) Usually the GA/vetergesic takes a good 48 hours or more to get out of their system. I usually keep them separate the first night or two at most, usually I section off a portion of the C & C cage. If she is happier with her friends then I would leave her with them now :)

Yeah I was planning to keep her separated for at least 3 days, she was by herself for 24 hours but as she seemed to be struggling by herself this morning I thought being with her friends would give her some support and motivation to get moving and eat, which it thankfully did, she did sleep for an hour or so at first being in there but then woke up and has remained up, active and eating for the last 12 hours, it has been exactly 36 hours now since surgery. She has been in the kitchen area most of the time eating the hay and drinking water and she had her veggies a couple of hours ago and ate them like nothing happened to her, I am weighing her daily too just to keep track of how much she's actually eating. I did syringe feed her this morning when she was feeling quite rubbish but I haven't had to do it again yet, I'm just hoping that this morning was her 'rock bottom' and she will continue to improve, she has coped with this whole thing a lot better than I expected which is good :)

She was 930g before surgery and is 880g now, is this normal? I can't find much information on spaying sows it's mostly neutering males

Hi, I am aware this is the complete wrong forum for this question but I am knew to this and desperate for an answer! I recently got my first ever guinea pigs last week, they have lived inside ever since. Tonight I got a second hand hutch from a friend who used to own a rabbit, the cage has mesh all around and on each floor has a hiding place which is relatively sheltered in which I have added extra shelter, hay and wood shavings. Next week I am purchasing a garden shed which will be solely for the guinea pigs for extra shelter. All week the temperatures should be between 10-17 degrees.. will the guinea pigs be ok in this outdoor cage for now? Thanks so much.
