am spending some time browsing the pets for sale sites, and have just come across an ad selling a female piggy, possibly mated with a skinny pig, she has two weeks to go, for £50! poor little girl, surely she should nt be moved to a new home a this stage, and £50! so sad.

That's ridiculous! And with a skinny so the babies will all be skinny gene carriers too...

I cna't believe what some people will do with their pigs esp while pregnant.

she doe snt come guaranteed to having been mated to the skinny either! so not a good set up at all, if i had females i would make contact, but my five boys would go mad!

Some people really do take the biscuit! If the person writing the advert can accurately say the poor girl has 2 weeks to go they obviously know when/where/who she was mated with. None of this 'possibly a skinny'. Sounds to me like someone is just trying to get a higher price for her...

Personally I believe guinea pigs were supposed to have hair. I'd take on a skinny pig temporarily but rehoming the babies them would be the problem because you can't always trust those who say they wouldn't breed from them. People can be very underhand when there is money to be made.

I agree that Skinnies aren't natural. My OH was a biochem student and she told me they were originally bred for lab work. That is not how they chose to be.

It would be best if the babies and MUm ended up in a rescue where it could be garunteed that no babies would be bred from.

I had my boys from Thistle Cavies and Wendi wouldn't rehome skinnies or known skinny carriers.

A pity she wants £50 or else we could find her a rescue retirement home...

i am going to send an email suggesting that this girl goes to a rescue, in a roundabout way, wish me luck!

i have sent a carefully worded email, they are in Essex, it also says need to rehome due to family commitments, i have said i will tell them of a rescue they can contact, anyone interested in case they come back to me?

I'm sure there are a few rescues that would be willing to help, or Suzy and the Piggy Bank might have some ideas. But no one would pay for the piggy, the lady would have to be willing to just give her up and sign her care over to the rescue.

I think if you can convince her she doesn't want to find herself with potentially 6 or 7 guinea pigs, of different sexes which need to be split before the breeding gets out of hands then she might consider it.

As Natalie has rightly said - if the poor pig can be given up with no money changing hands then the Piggy Bank can swing into action.

If no local rescue space can be found a local PB member may be able to foster her until after the birth or she can come here.

i did say in my email that i had guinea pigs , but could nt afford to pay for her, then went on to say that if she needed a home in a hurry then perhaps if she got back to me then i could supply her with a contact for a rescue to take her, no reply as yet, as she is close to me i could temporarily take her, , and keep her well away from my boys, but it would nt be ideal, i did start this after all! i do realise though, that perhaps looking on the pet pages is perhaps not a good idea, as i could fill the rescues just on my own with what i find!

Oh that is terrible. It sounds like all they want is money. :( I think you should email again.

i'm not sure if this is the right thing to do. but could we raise 50 between us to save her and send her to rescue or is this just feeding the business for breeders to take advantage?

The first rule of rescue is not to reward by handing over money for any animal. It defeats the purpose of rescuing, all it does is perpetuate the problem.

The Piggy Bank is for genuine rescues, not to line the pocket of breeders.

If this thread deteriorates into purchasing rather then rescue I will ask for it to be locked.

sorry i know you're right. I just felt desperately sad for this girl.

i wont be offering money, thats for sure, i will send another message on the pretence i dont think i sent the first one properly, then i am afraid that will be it as they obviously want to sell her :(
