Hi all, I am very new to this but could do with some of your lovey advice if possible.

I recently purchase two female piggies (have had them more almost 7 weeks now). They began to settle in quite nicely then all a sudden one of the female became very secluded, seemed quite agitated and aggressive. I put it down to just settling in at first but over the weeks she began getting bigger..

This was then I realised that she was probably pregnant. I've had a vet to confirm that my other baby is female also which means she must have been pregnant when I got her :(

She is absolutely huge now and I have been able to see, feel and even hear the babies chattering for the past week now. I've read that if you can hear teeth chattering then you're within days of her delivering them, but there been no sign still.

I'm pretty rubbish at trying to feel her pelvis aswell, so I'm just worried because of how young she is that maybe she's going to have complications. I've been checking I can feel babies everyday. Mum seems pretty content, doesn't really move around much now because she's so big.

I've also moved her to a separate cage now away from my other girl just so she can have some rest lol.

I know this is a stab in the dark but can anyone give me an idea of when you think she'll deliver them? Just don't want to leave it too late if you guys think I should take her to a vets soon.

Thanks guys :)

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Firstly, I am attaching a link that will help.

Don't worry it's not uncommon with pets hop bought piggies that they are pregnant and thus were an active forum promoting rescue guinea pigs.

You will need to consider what you will do with your babies when they arrive, males and females. Whatever you do, please do not sell them on other websites, very often they can end up as food.

Can you confirm your location into your profile as that often helps with the right responses etc.

Do have a good look around the forum and feel free in asking questions.

Oh don't you worry. I'm planning to keep the babies! There's no way I could give then up after looking after them. I'm a veterinary nurse so they will be in safe hands :)

Hi there & welcome to the forum,

i had my one of my first ever piggies turned out to be pregnant, i took them both back to the vets on suspicion of pregnancy & the vet confirmed this & checked them both to reassure me i hadn't made a mistake & yes they were both girls... phew!
the father hadn't been separated from the others & had, had his wicked way before i bought them, 82 days after i brought them home, a furball baby made three! she was huge!
just be careful with pregnant mums diet that too many pellets are not fed, as this will produce larger babies & a bigger risk of complications.

Have a read through of the pregnancy section & there is a lot of helpful advice on there.
my vet said that generally the more babies inside the shorter the gestation period, that could be a reason why my solitary baby took so long, as its above the average waiting time i believe?

If you could put your general location, country, county or city & the advice given can be tailored better to suit you. ( go into your settings in the toolbar at the top).

Keeping all the babies hey.... addictive little creatures aren't they ;)
hopefully they're all girls then you can have a mini herd :tu:

xx

What are castrates males like with females? I've never had a male guinea pig!

Our guinea Edward is neutered and lives with two females and he is very happy:D
