hi,

I have been pricing up guinea pig food this afternoon. I normally buy Guinea pig nuggets from Pets at Home as I walk that way but I was wondering whether there is something better and more cost effective than this.

I normally pay £4.24 for 2 kg and £7.99 for 4 kg.I can't find any reviews for this food on the site. There are also lots of other foods on offer too in PAT or there are other shops I can get too. Also what about online - I can order in bulk then too. The timothy hey is £3.39 while Supa forage excel is £3.49 and Excel Herbage is £4.99.

Do the prices seem high to you? and what are your thoughts on these foods.

Jen

I use the excel nuggets blackcurrant and oreano one bag lasts me a long time I get the 2kg one I think costs about £5 and lasts ages for me and I have 3 pigs but there diet is mainly made up of greens and hay, they have unlimited hay and readigrass and also lots of veg.

Now the hay I buy I have started buying Oxbow hay, which has fantastic reviews and smells and looks delicious. I paid £30 for 4kg Including delivery, since then I have found out I can get for £25, which I will be doing next time.

Farms normally sell really cheap hay though!

My three are fed on the P@H nuggets too and they seem to really enjoy them :) I usually go through a 2kg bag in 4 -6 weeks or so.

Like Joanne, my girls love Oxbow Hay! I usually buy the 1kg bags which work out more expensive, but I have no where to store any larger bags :( It's not the cheapest hay but it definatley gets the thumbs up from my lot! :))

Shell the 4kg bag isn't that big... rolleyes, but I shall not be getting any bigger. Must say had it's 2 weeks now, and theres still millions. I love Oxbow... it is the best hay don't now who likes it more me or the piggies lol! xx>>>

I'm working on concentrating on giving them veggies but I don't drive and the supermarkets around me are out of the way. I was in Aldi at 7pm this evening and they hadnt marked any of the veg down ;( although admittedly they didnt have much on the shelves period.

I used to live with someone who worked in one of the supermarkets and she used to bring home veg (Chicory, lettuce etc) which they marked down to a penny a packet but its on an industrial estate near the docks and I don't feel safe walking back from there ;( otherwise I could save a futune as this week so far I have spent nearly a fiver in veg alone for them!

I spend a fortune on veg I either buy it from the farmers market or Marks and Spencers. It's not good, but convient for me. I spend anything to £5-£10 a week on veg, I did go to Tesco's on Sunday and got some reduced stuff that was good. Is aldi not normally very cheap anyway?

Hmm, I need a sort out anyway so I'll try and make some space, thanks Joanne!

I had a hay delivery today and got rather giddy at work. I just got stange looks from the guy who I work with :(|) :red

Jen Blue - I know how you feel on the veggie front. I managed to get some reduced salad bags from Asda earlier in the week, but somehow still managed to spend another £5 or so...and we've gone and run out of corriander so I'll be back again tomorrow! rolleyes

Aldi is pretty cheap but not as cheap as a penny for packets of veg, like I would be able to get from the next nearest supermarket.

Can hay go "off" does anyone know? I have been putting normal hay into their hay racks and they seem to be ignoring it. I have had it awhile. How can I tell if its off?

Thanks

it smells musty and horrible and usually will only go off if stored damp or in a damp place with mould spores...
