Hi all, gutted I'm having to message again with a problem, one of our male pigs Gary isn't well, was happy and normal weight wise, behaviour etc until recently. Worth a mention but recently our healthy pig started barbering the poorly one -poorly pig symptoms include weight loss although eating well and drinking, almost minimal use of back legs, very subdued and easy to catch and handle .
Any help or advice would be appreciated before a vet visit.
He seems very submissive toward our healthy pig, is there any chance this could be related to 'bullying' or am I clutching at straws

Please have your boy seen as soon as possible and start syringe feeding and watering straight away as soon as you notice any weight loss over 50g/1 oz. Our illustrated guide contains tips on what you can do in an emergency.

It looks like there could be a pain issue somewhere, but it will take proper examination to get at the bottom of it and find what is causing it. All we can do is guess wildly - the causes can range from bladder stones to arthritis, or a lump inside the body, just to name a few. :(

If a guinea pig is losing weight, yes, you need to top up. Please keep in mind that up to 80% of the daily food intake is hay - and that is something you cannot control. Hay is generally the first food group that is dropped when a piggy is not well/in pain. It can be very deceptive seeing a guinea pig - scales don't lie! Please always switch to weighing daily at the same time in the feeding cycle in order to keep a close eye on the food intake.

Ok I see, still munching away on hay at the moment but like you say weight loss is still occurring

It is important to try and keep the weight up/slow down any weight loss until a piggy can be diagnosed and any treatment has time to kick in. All the best at the vets!
