Hi all, I am considering adopting a young boar soon who is suffering from a prolapsed penis. I understand he will need daily treatment and a lot of commitment, which I am more than happy to do, but I just want to make sure I will be capable of giving him the care he needs as I have not owned a Guinea Pig before (just lots of cats, fish and a gerbil). He is currently at a main high-street chain store, but has been signed over to rescue and will be with them soon.

Does anyone have any experience with this condition?
Could this be a sign or symptom of something more sinister?
What sort of conditions would I need to be on the look out for as a secondary illness (i.e. could it increase chances of bladder conditions or infections)?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, and will update with further information once I have heard back from the rescue!

A legitimate rescue will make sure that he is healthy before you can have him, and if he requires special treatment then they make sure that you are capable of handling his needs. Also look into a cavy savvy vet you can use should any issues come up (good to have anyway). Good luck!

Thanks for the advice! I have a friend who has a guinea pig at the moment, will find out where she takes her boar and have mine signed up there. Have heard great things about my local rescue, so am sure they will be able to make the best decision regarding his welfare (hopefully that will involve me!). Would just like to get some opinions from people who have dealt with this condition directly, to ensure I go in with all the information possible and give him the best chance, but will speak to them directly once they have replied to me.
