Sandy has had gradual weight loss for about a month now. She's been seen by a vet. Today she had her urine tested and her protein levels were a bit high possibly there was a suggestion of the start of kidney failure. Nothing's definite yet though, we are going to try a different medicine regime for a week and if there is no improvement then she will be sedated her teeth checked and blood samples taken for a more definitive answer. In the meantime is there anything she should be avoiding food wise. She is on long term metacam (for unrelated problem). I'm going to reduce the dose over the next week. Thanks.

Hi! Sorry to hear your little one is having problems! High protein in urine could be from the kidneys, especially with prolonged metacalm use, but can be caused by other things too.

What is your wee one on metacalm for?

Trying to reduce the dose of that (under your vets guidance) would be a good start. Your vet may trial antibiotics so see if this is an infection. After that, if the protein is still there, your vet could run a urine protein creatinine ratio (UPC) on a urine sample, which will determine if protein is indeed from kidney failure or from infection.

Its a non invasive test which gives you a clearer picture if bloods arent possible.

Hope you get an answer soon xx

Thanks for that reply Adelle. It's a bit of a saga so here goes. last August Sandy started to lose weight she also had swollen lymph glands. So off to the vets and to start with she was on a course of septrin and metacam in case it was an infection. She also had a very bad problem with mites. - low immune system, it took a very long time to treat. Two weeks later the glands were still swollen so the vet took samples from 4 of them, we thought the worse, that it was lymphoma but it turns out to be infected basal cells. The weight loss had stopped but we switched to baytril for the infection. If I remember she had a 2 week course, the glands all but went ( there is now only one very small one in her neck). But she continued on the metacam whenever we stopped it the weight would drop. It was all very puzzling. So she has been on 0.3ml of metacam since. I've now reduced it by half. She's seeing the vet again on Friday. Previous to the post she had been back on the baytril for a week. I'm hoping that all makes sense
