Hi!

Our boy is 6.5 years old and over the last couple of months with realised that the tip of his penis keeps staying ‘out’ of its designated spot.

He doesn’t seem overly uncomfortable with this, is weeing comfortably etc, but the tip of his penis is slightly red (but not oozing/changing colour).

I have been regularly cleaning the entire shaft from any debris, and applying coconut oil to help slide it back in, and whilst sometimes this is successful, other times the tip still peeks out (maybe like 2-3mm of penis).

I have read that this can be to do with the muscles becoming weaker with age, and I have got a vet appointment for him with an exotics vet, but just wondering if anyone has experienced this and can give any tips?

The muscles weakening with age is more to do with the anal sac and poops not coming out properly (impacting); not so much to do with the penis not retracting.

I’m glad you’ve got a vet appointment for him to be checked.

I hope he is ok

I had on old boar with that problem, of course I took him to the vet. The penis prolapse did clear up eventually but I can't remember how.

Hi

Other than a lubricant and regular cleaning/disinfecting, there is not much you can do if it is not caused by an actual blockage (sperm rod, build up of hardened smegma. The tip of the penis should be red/purplish in colour; just never blue (blood supply cut off, usually by hair).

I cant give you any tips but my recently adopted neutered boar is the same. The vet doesnt seem worried in his case. Id be interested to see what your vet thinks

Heya, my boy was neutered and then his penis 'hang out' and has never gone back in....- my thread here shows the journey if it helps - https://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/threads/prolapsed-penis-vet-recommendations.211908/
Edam thank you for making contact. This is most interesting - Duncan was neutered before I adopted him but I did wonder if it was tied up with that.

I give him a little clean of his willy frequently so Ill carry on as is.

Freddy is a total cutie 😍

Unfortunately not the update I wanted to come with. We have unfortunately had to make the decision to PTS. The vet felt a large mass in his abdomen - we’re not sure if this is what pushed his penis out, or whether it was just to the weakening of muscles/nerves with age. I’m truly devastated.

BIG HUGS

I am so very sorry that the news was so bad but you have made the right decision. It comes as such a shock when you cannot brace for it.

Please give yourself some time to no be OK while you take it all in. Nothing you have done wrong. But with more and more forever chemicals building up in the environment, cancer is sadly becoming a lot more common in piggies - and not just because the diagnostics have become a lot better.
