Hi all,

I am not on this planet at the moment, having to spend every fourth hour of the day and night syringe feeding 3 families of baby hedgehogs in my care. I also have the ill guinea pigs from the recent rescue to care for, as well as my full time job and my family.

I have so many requests each year from volunteers who would like to work with the guinea pigs and hedgehogs. I am often contacted by local scout and brownie groups asking if they can earn one of their badges but at present they are not allowed any contact with any of the animals as I don't hold insurance.

Having spoken to a friend who fundrasies for the RNLI we are going to create a quiz for anyone to enter. It will be a question and answer quiz that will be sent to you in the post. Once you have completed the answers all the entries will come back here. If you want your answers returned to see how you did, please include a self addressed envelope.

At the closing date, all correct entries will be put into a hat and a winner pulled out at random. The winner will receive a choice of a £50 Marks and Spencer or a £50 Pets at Home Voucher.

As I am not a registered charity I cannot put a price on the entry, only ask for a donation. Please can we have a donation of £1 upwards as an entry fee.

All the money raised will go into public liability insurance so that I can go around the schools, and clubs with hedgehogs and guinea pigs and teach children about caring for animals.

It will also mean that I can have people view the rescues centres and volunteer to help out meaning I can take more animals in than I presently can.

This will make a huge difference to many people and animals lives.

If you would like to enter or need further info please get in touch.

Many thanks
Claire

Hi Claire,

I think that sounds like a great idea. I would love to contribute.

A xx

I will happily enter the competition, so please let me have the quiz. I'm not very good at quizzes, though, so might not want to see how well I did at the end!

Claire i do this already with the local groups and I do not have insurance. I always inform places that I am not insured and most places dont seem to mind.

Great way to raise the money though. I like your creativity.

Maybe it's a Norfolk thing but the schools are so strict out this way. There's no way they will let me take an animal into the school. Just recently they held a 'work place' week where various employed people attended and gave talks to the children. They wouldn't even let a person in the school with a guide dog to prove their suitability for employment.

I have 2 people who are off to vet school next year and so wanted to get experience with exotics before they started training. I felt bad saying no, knowing they were more than capable to look after hedgehogs and guinea pigs.

When I set up the hedgehog rescue one of the conditions from the council was I would have to have public liability insurance for any member to come into contact with the hedgehogs as they are seen as high risk.

Thank you for such a nice response.

I will be printing the questions this weekend so if you could please send me your name and addresses, by pm, I will get the questions sent to you.

I don't need payment until you enter. This can be sent by cheque, postal order, cash or paypal. If paying by paypal please can you make sure it is sent as a personal gift so that I don't have fees deducted.

Thank you ever so much.
Claire

The questions have been set. There are 45 in total. All to do with British Birds. Questions include cryptic clues and anagrams. You can use the internet to help you if need be.

The closing date will be 31st August so please apply for any quiz sheets at least a couple of weeks before the closing date to give yourselves enough time to get them back to me.

Answers will be published on my website together with the name of the winner.

If anybody would like extra sheets to sell on our behalf, to friends and family, please let me know.

Many thanks
Claire

I got my quiz today thanks Claire...quite challenging, it's a brilliant quiz!

I'd like to enter, too, and will send a donation by paypal.

Maybe insurance cover seems a bit extreme, but it is important to cover yourself if something goes wrong. Even if the group says, "No problem, just come along, we don't mind," it still needs to be considered.

If one of the animals bites or scratches someone, they contract an illness or even just get an allergic reaction, they could possibly make a legal claim against you.

I remember some years back that one of those petting farm places got roasted because a child visiting contracted E Coli after letting a cow lick them. I don't remember the outcome exactly, but I'm sure they had to claim on their insurance to cover the damages.

Definitely shop around for quotes though. The amount of premiums can vary greatly.

* rubbing brain cells together in preparation for quiz. :))
