Hmmm, strange one... Possibly a foot spur next to the toe nail, is it on the toenail or growing along the side next to it?

It's hard to tell from the photos. It could be a foot spur, but I've only seen them originating in the skin of the foot, or between the toes. I have to say it does look rather like a human fungal nail infection, but I've not heard of it in a pig, and they are usually pretty infectious. Have you had a vet take a look at it?

I would recommend to have it seen by a vet. It doesn't look like a nail that has grown back thicker after a nasty break.

It seems to be on the nail itself not alongside it. Hubby has searched and seems to think fungal and it recommends coconut oil massaged on it. Not been to vet yet throwing it open to you guys on here first.

I would rather seek proper vet care than home treatment. Not being a common complaint doesn't mean that it cannot happen. We have seen this repeatedly!

Will take her tomorrow or Tuesday and let you know what we find out - thanks for your advice!

Yeah, a definite vets visit to get it confirmed, it is good it hasn't spread. Let us know what it turns out to be

Hi guys, the vets said she has torn off the nail somehow and its got infected. He's given her septrin antibiotics and she doesn't need to go back. Bargain only cost me £28. Happy piggy and piggy mummy :)

Not sure how she tore it they are in c and c cage indoors can't see what she would have got it caught on. Maybe when out for floor time but still don't see where...!

Glad you got it sorted out and treated. Did the vet cut the other nails for you or suggest it?
Because they are VERY long. Don't forget the other 3 feet!

No he didn't! I always worry the nails are too long we do cut them every few weeks but I'm always scared of cutting too much off :( I know you are meant to trim them a little each week to make them easier to cut maybe we should try doing that I'm always scared we will hurt her :(

I think we all feel the same about nail cutting. I do little and often. I took mine to a local rescue last time they needed their nails cutting. I was advised that, if I wanted to do it myself next time, it' s easier with 2. Is there anyone who could hold your Guinea while you trim?

Its often my other half that does it tbh. He is brilliant at it but always has me standing there going 'be careful don't cut too much off' lol.

I know it can be a worry to cut nails, especially dark ones. If you have someone who can hold a torch to the nail, that helps to illuminate the vein. Sometimes, the piggie will squeak when I just squeeze the tip of the vein without cutting it. I can see the vein retreating as it is squeezed. So far, haven't cut any too short. Of course, a well-behaved piggie helps!
