Alfie was neutered on Wednesday, there were some complications as they think he inhaled something. We nearly lost him, but now he's picking up again.

I now can't tell what is 'normal' recovery after neutering and what is because of the problems with his breathing. His breathing is about back to normal, but he is very quiet compared to his usual self. Mostly he's asleep in his cage, but when I get him out he'll have a wander round and be cuddled. He's not back to eating properly, I'm hand feeding.

So how long until your GP was back to his normal self? Was he quiet and sleepy for a time? When did he get back to normal eating? Also, does metacam make them sleepy?

Thanks!

Ideally, a boar should behave like nothing has happened after a neutering op. However, if you run into GA complications, it can take some time until he is finding his appetite and even longer until he is making up the lost weight. Your continuing hand feeding care and alertness is crucial during that time; it can make all the difference. Have you seen our new hand feeding guide in the Caring for an ill guinea pig subsection?

As to his ongoing listlessness I would have your boy checked re. swellings/allergic reactions to stitching etc. if it doesn't get better over the weekend. Please see a vet as an emergency if he is getting worse.

PS: What antibiotic is he on?

Thanks, that's what I was expecting, that it would be like nothing had happened!

He had put on a little weight this morning. His stitches etc are looking good. Today is the first day he hasn't been seen by the vet and he's back again on Monday morning.

I just hand fed him and he was wriggling and chewing the syringe, so I think he is picking up! I wonder if he's exhausted after not being able to breathe properly! He was gasping for air at one point.

I've read the guides and I'll see what the vet thinks! He was such a character, I don't want to loose that!

As he is picking up, if slowly, I think you don't have to worry about losing him! It is a very encouraging sign that he is putting on weight and becoming more alert (i.e. uncooperative).

Wishing you all the best. I cant really help unfortunately I have had 4 neuters done throughout the years but never had any issues they have all been back to normal within 24 hours!

I put him into the indoor run that my girls had been in earlier today, we certainly perked up then! Popcorning every where and tucking in to their food bowl which I hadn't moved!

I think he'll be ok, it's just taking a bit longer!
