Just a quick question but my vet wants to try Ellen on baytril for a couple of weeks which I’m not happy about but I’m not a vet and I can see her reasoning but she always advises to give a little sugar free ribeana with the baytril to mask the taste but do you give the ribeana neat or do you mix it with a little water? It’s been a few years since I’ve given baytril and I can’t remember what I did last time.

Ellen is usually good taking meds as she’s used to it (especially septrin and metacam) but she’s going to hate the baytril :( I already have probiotics

I am far from an expert, but to be honest I tried dipping the end of the syringe in pretty much everything (including Ribena), I tried bribes before and after, I tried all sorts and Ruby still knew it was Baytril!
In the end I just held her firmly, squirted it in (across the mouth behind the front teeth) and got the job done.
It sounds awful, and maybe Ellen will be more compliant, but at the end of the day it was quicker and less stressful for both of us for me to be firm and just get it over and done with.

I hope Ellen feels better soon

My vet recommended mixing baytril with blackcurrant cordial, Piggle took it like that no problem but she tends to bite anything she doesnt like then not let go like a shark or a pitbull so her attack-hatred of the syringe made it quite easy to squirt stuff down her throat :)
But yes we made a bit of quite strong sugar free asda brand apple and blackcurrant cordial in a cup then sucked up an equal amount to the baytril and it was ok!

The one time i've used it, I diluted it a little, although i've had more success with orange juice. That being said, I find it easier to not dilute it with anything and just get the smaller volume of liquid down them and offer something nice after..the little monkeys seem to know it's baytril no matter what i've mixed it with! XD

Thank you all. I will try it neat first but I’m not holding out much hope! But if that doesn’t work, l’ll try mixing some juice with a little water in a cup.

She’s ok but we’re still struggling to get rid of the blood from her urine. She has IC and had a bad flare and uti over Christmas and we’re still battling it :( She’s been on septrin for 6 weeks now so my vet wants to give baytril a try before spending a lot of money on yet another culture.

Thankfully for Ellen, apart from a few squeaky wees she’s acting perfectly normal x

Hope Ellen improves and takes her baytril like a good girl! The trouble with baytril is it seems to have a nasty after taste so everything tastes a bit weird for them afterwards. Piggle took it no problem but Jezzy floof lost a lot of weight when she had baytril, so might be worth monitoring weight every day and feeding a bit of porridge oats or extra treats when it isnt baytril time!

When Christian had to have Baytril he was used to nice tasting medicine so he gave me a look that clearly said "WTF was THAT?!?!?!?!?!" then I immediately give him Metacam after and he forgave me. As long as he knew he was getting his Metacam he would take the Baytril. The Ever Beautiful Betsy, loves Baytril and takes it quite happily. She is one straaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaange piggy.

Don't give the ribena with the baytril; it is easier to give the baytril straight and then follow it up with the same amount of ribena or something stronger tasting to wash the taste away.

I actually just hold them up against my stomach, sneak my hand around to give the Baytril with a syringe in the side of their mouths, and then give them a treat and apologize profusely when I'm done! I find it easier to get them to take a tiny volume of Baytril than a larger volume of Baytril plus fluid, which probably still tastes pretty bad!

I have vegarks pro c which I have brought in advance but I thought you couldn’t give that until at least an hour after the baytril?
Thats true, but i wasnt using it for the probiotic, more for the vit c and they loved the taste. Can it do harm? Oops i hope not
