On another forum I go on someone was anoyed at me for keeping Rabbit and guinea pigs in the same shed.
She/he said that Rabbits carry illnesses that can be passed through the air to my guinea pigs. I thought what the hell is this person on about. Have any of you lot heard this? mallethead
My rabbits never have contact with my guinea pigs cos they are dangerous when they jump and kick and they could hurt a piggy. :...

They can pass on bacteria to guinea pigs. But to be honest, I let my rabbits and guinea pigs be next door to each other and there's never been a problem with it.

I really don't like people on forums just giving out to other people and judging them, especially on animal forums. That person could just have politely told you that instead of getting annoyed.

I cant think of any nasties that are particually transferable, its not like GP's carry myxi or VHD, and I doubt the rabbits are going to give much to piggies. But I'm not all too clear on it.

Sorry
x.

Did they say what the illness it was? Is it pasturella or something. That name could be completely wrong.

I imagine if the Rabbits and Guinea Pigs aren't in the same cage then it wouldn't be able to pass.

Hi Becky :)

My buns share the same shed as my pigs & i've had no problems. However, a few years ago my step-daughters rabbit did develop "snuffles" & 2 of my pigs passed within a month of each other (i was in hospital at the time). I cannot definitely say it was pasturella that caused their deaths but it was thought it "likely."
These 2 pigs didn't live together & their cage-mates were fine & the only symptom each presented was a huge weight loss.

They are right - it is entirely possible for your guinea pigs to get ill from your rabbits as the rabbits carry a bacteria that they can happily live with but can kill a guinea pig. And it does happen.

I personally wouldnt keep them in the same building but people do without problems; just a risk I wouldnt personally take.

But aslong as they dont start touching noses or anything then that minimises the risk alot!
