hi everyone me and my partner have been having a discussion for a while now about keeping rabbits and piggies together he seems to think that its ok but I'm against it we looked up the rspca website who said its not recommend then phoned them only to b told that the rspca actually highly recommend keeping rabbits with guinea pigs!
now even i'm confused lol
is it or not? not that I'm going to put them together anyway!!

No I wouldn't do it. A rabbit, even a small Nethie like Tika has such a kick on her and would do damage to a pig. Also, the diet aspect too. Pigs need Vit C and Buns Vit D so they aren't compatible.

The RSPCA should know better than to encourage it. :(

we had a netherland dwarf rabbit with my guinea pig when i was younger, about 18 years ago when we didnt know any better - they got along fine, the rabbit was castrated though and the most soppiest thing in the world!

I wouldnt do it now though knowing what i do.

I had a Netherland dwarf rabbit that lived with a baby piggy and they got on fine but then the piggy died (not the fault of the rabbit) and I put another piggy with the rabbit. The rabbit badly attacked the piggy - fortunately I caught it doing it and got the piggy out and she escaped with just lacerations which I treated. I would never ever do it again (this was around 20 odd years ago when they used to say piggies were fine with rabbits)

Piggies should live with piggies and rabbits should live with rabbits in my opinion. It can work out but I don't think its a risk worth taking.:)

Hi
I wouldn't keep rabbits with piggies - I know of one sad case where the rabbit killed the guinea pig:(.

I'm facing a dilemma I know of one piggy being kept with a rabbit locally & the piggy is not happy. I haven't got any room for any more. I have tried to tell the owner that they should be separate but they can't afford another hutch.

Mine are strictly separate. In fact the rabbits aren't really interested in the piggies but it's the piggies who always come out and sniff & wheek at the bunnies when they are in their runs on the lawn!

So it's not just in Australia that the RSPCA need some educating and some lessons in people skills !

I would not recommend piggies and bunnies in the same although you see it everyday in the pet shops.
If a young bunny and piggy grow up together it might be different but there is a big chance that the rabbit won't accept another new piggy.

Personally I keep my buns and pigs separate. Don't like to come out one morning and find the piggies trampled on because bunny had his jolly five minutes of crazyness running through the hutch and throwing binkies.

Humm its hard. We had a rabbit (rescue) who was housed with a piggy before he entered the rescue and they kept the rabbit and piggy together. I adopted them as a pair and never tried to seperate them, they loved each other too much and the rabbit was very laid back and had hind leg problems so could not really kick out much. When they were apart (when the rabbit needed an operation) neither of them ate and they were both very sad and life less.

I would not do it as common practice but in situations where animals have been allowed to bond (in my case because they were kept together before I had them) I think you have to judge every situation on its own.

Hi.

I would not recommend placing guinea and rabbit together, there is a lot of different views out there however rabbit could kick guinea etc.

I would never ever have any rabbits with my guinea pigs.

Rabbits and guinea pigs in the same cage are a big no. Firstly because even a little netherland dwarf has a very powerful kick, one kick from a scared or angry rabbit could seriously injure a guinea pig.

Secondly different dietary needs, piggies need extra vitamin c, its a been a while since I've owned a rabbit, but I know the food I fed him had added vitamin something and it wasn't vitamin c. So unless you feed them their pellets seperately, which would be a lot of hassle, your pets wouldn't be getting the right nutrients as they would be constantly eating each others foods.

Thirdly, they are a completely different species, piggies communicate with a range of squeaks and other noises, and rabbits communicate largely using body language alot of which is characterised by movement of their large ears, which piggies don't have. Therefore they will not be able to communicate with each other properly and this would probably be very frustrating and stressful for both animals.

Then there the diseases, I don't know what diseases and illnesses rabbits can get, but I do know that some of them can probably be pased to piggies.

So whilst I would say it would be okay to have a couple of rabbits and a couple of guinea pigs in seperate hutches and allow them to interact under supervision during floortime, I would not say its okay to allow them to live together in the same cage/hutch.

I have read lots of articles about keeping rabbits with guinea pigs, most of them saying never do it. I have only ever fostered one Netherland Dwarf rabbit for a short period of time and I have to say he was really lively and scratched me badly and he lived alone.

I know that some people say that their rabbit and guinea pig get on great together, but I would never pair a rabbit with a piggy. Some rabbits get really big by comparison to a guinea pig.

I guess the rabbit could be docile but the thought really worries me.

And I thought rabbits ate different dried food to guinea pigs, because rabbits had something added to their food. Can't remember what it is but think it is to ward off infection in the rabbit and also guinea pigs need extra Vit C added, whereas rabbits don't.

I think I am right, but if not, then feel free to correct me :)
