:( I found a rat in the tool shed yesterday >:( I am so scared of rats been having nightmares all night about it..
Is is safe for the piggies to be out in their run if theres rats about ?
Does anyone have piggies out in a hutch in the day but inside overnight ?

Blinkin things I hate um >:( I would keep a close eye on your piggies putting them out in the day and keeping them in at night wont really stop them unfortunately where there is one there are generally more :( I would get some poison down asap obviously away from piggies and if outside in a bate trap or I think there are some more human ways of doing it but I am not a fan of rogue rats we are having a few problems with them here ::) ::)

Keep all your food inside and clear up any spilt on the floor :)

I would be careful, rats are predators and they are very intelligent, can you bring them in to your house for a while?

My dad tried everything to get rid of rats.
Sorry if you thinks it's cruel.
he set light to the hole, blast the hole with compressed air and put poison down! But they still survived and we had stronger poison! I'd be very careful with ratties!

I have to agree get some Poison down where no other animals can get to it.
wild rats will have a go at small animals if they get the chance

My piggies are indoors but the foster piggies are outside in a hutch, do you think a rat would go for rabbits ?

When our rabbit lived in the same shed as the piggies last year, he had free run of the floor during the day (his hutch door open) & we couldn't understand where all his food was going until we copped for the rat :o
No harm came to him or the piggies. :)

We have been putting poison down every couple of days here :( they seem to be having a great time with it all the trays are empty but we could still hear them a few days ago and they have chewed through my wire to the light in the shed twice :tickedoff: hopefully they will be sorted soon but we are going to keep the bait trays topped up just incase grrrrrr hate the little horrors And our next door neighbour whose garden is overgrown has decided to clear it all so the old green house and garage where the little blighters live will be moved guess where they are gonna go ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

I do know of a chinchilla that was kept in the owners shed and a rat tried to drag the chinchilla through the bars ripping the leg very badly to the extent it had to be amputated :'(.
I also know of a litter of farm kittens that where taken by a rat :(

thats right , rats will attack anything for food. I would be worried about my rabbit if i knew of a rat (s) hanging around. Maybe an exterminator will help you get rid.

I dont know if its true but i heard that if a rat is burned or killed in a certain area it keeps the others away ? maybe thats not right so dont quote me on it :D

You may say eww but i ve had a pet rat and believe me they are very clever, they can even chew through concrete! :o

Do you know how they are getting in? eg a hole or something? I was told to fill it with polyfilla and amix of poison. As they eat the polyfilla to get through the poison gets eaten too

anything is worth a go...maybe dress up as a rat and scare them off ;)

Ooh, what a worry for you. I had an 'orrible experience with a rat in the spring. Neighbour had been feeding them! They'd obviously bred and were foraging for food around our overflowing wheelie bins (fortnightly collections AND I have a 1/2 size bin because I am a single person). I went to take the bin down the drive in the dark in prep for the morning collection. Obviously a rat had got into the partially open bin to get at the food and it jumped out as I was wheeling the bin and I just rolled the heavy bin over it's poor little body because I didn't see it in the dark. I felt like **** for weeks.
I think you're doing the best thing putting poison down, as sad as it is. Unfortunately the increased rat population is causing them to become more aggressive in order to secure food, territory etc. I believe they are aggressive towards guinea pigs and rabbits. Perhaps someone knows how to rat proof outside hutches? I guess you have to do that for chicken and duck runs too.

I hate using poison but it had to be done :( the bunnys shed and enclosure are very close to the shed with the rat in.. The poison has been eaten hubby checked today.

I am not keen on using poison BUT I care about my piggies too much and we have had them in the upstairs bedroom before and that was the most awful thing I never want that again. I also dont want my neighbours getting them and then trying to blame my piggies for their arrival. Dont think about it just keep filling the poison trays up.

They polyfilla idea is a good one will remember that if they do decided to get into my shed!
