I have found evidence of rats in the guinea pig shed!:)>>>
So have ordered a skip for tomorrow to clear everything out thats not needed and can't be scrubbed within an inch of its life!
Hate them the OH goes stupid about them and has threatened to move out (Believe me its tempting he's being a pain the the bum about them!)
The guineas are in their out door runs wrapped up like eskimos until everything is out scrubbed and dumped!
just the thought of them out their! EEEEWWWWW!
Just hd to vent my spleen LOL x

Argh! Be VERY CAREFUL - recently heard a story about a woman going to two of her baby boars and finding a severed head and a back bone and the remaining piggy shivering in the corner. Turned out a rat had got into the cage and had killed and eaten one of the baby boars! Also had a friend whose poor pigger had it's leg chewed on by a rat. Ugh! They are horrible creatures really, I'd get some poison and traps put down and good luck with the scrubbing!

Oh no!

Make sure you clean everything out that you can, and it would probably be a good idea to make sure you keep food indoors and away from outdoors. Metal containers too, cos Rats will eat through just about anything!

It's highly unlikely they'd attack your piggies though unless there was no other food avaliable. They're scavangers, rather than hunters.

oh no, horrible things! I had rats/mice in my guinea shed last year stupidly i had a big bag of food just open on the floor and didnt really watch if any went on the floor, so it attracted them, they also took up shelter there so we got a skip to get rid of it all none of my guineas were hurt and they were in a open top run in the shed. I now have all my guineas inside with the food bag well sealed lol be careful when cleaning the stuff rats carry horrible diseases spread through their urine. The food was collected in little piles around my shed, my mum thought we had a squirrel at one point not a rat/mouse!

good luck getting rid of them.

Last year a rat managed to chew its way up into the shed and made off with several younger and some weaker piggies. I wont go into detail about what was left, but needless to say, if it was anything to go by, i am NOT looking forward to the day when the shed floor has to be lifted.
Please do be cautious about poisons that you may put down, as some are also harmful to hedgehogs, birds, dogs and cats etc, and of course if any of the piggies get hold of it.
Once the pigs are out of the shed, coat, and i mean really splash the stuff on, a large dollop of Jeyes fluid. Rats are disgusted by the stuff, it does them no harm, but is so pungent to their nostrils it puts them off going anywhere near.
It certainly did the trick for me, i sloshed a whole tin of Jeyes down the rat hole and never seen a single once since! Stuart Little, the resident wild mouse still hangs about, which is a good sign, as mice mean there are no rats around.
Good luck with it, and if you dont already, invest in some garden bins (long plastic or metal ones) to store food and bedding etc in, which always helps keep the pests away!

Metal containers too, cos Rats will eat through just about anything!

I bought galvanised rubbish bins to store food - they're a bit costly in the first instance, but they hold a lot, and last forever - and nothing can get in. But I lined it with a black bin-liner, because I thought the bins looked like they might have been treated with something (oil?) so the bin liner protects the food.

I'm sorry you've got this problem; whilst I love most animals, I'm afraid rats is (are?) something I can't abide.

yuk i am terrified of rats i think i have had one in my compost bin again despite putting wire netting underneath my dogs have been going barmy around the bin and the compost has defenetly had something in it so poor hubby has got to empty it all and dig it into the ground at the weekend i think i will give up on composting so guess were i will be while hes doing that watching out of the lounge window

Well the skip arrived at 730 this mornng and its now FULL its an 8 yard skip and me and the OH have spent the morning removing everything from the sheds and discovered they have tunneled under one shed to the other which has conceret slabs they wobbled when i walked on them! at least 6ft under the slabs they have chewed in to the cupboard i had the vet bed in and had nested in their! some books etc that where stored in the guinea shed had gotten damp and with rat droppings everywhere thats been dumped i also found they have tunneled under the patio in front of the sheds! SO i have stuck the hose on under the shed and down any holes i can find the OH has been wingeing about it CONSTANTLY! So if any one wants a 1957 well used (i've been told) male please TAKE HIM! LOL:))
But the thought of them out their! EEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!

They are gross, I really hate rats. Had a few nasty moments when I had the horses:(

I've had a few rats in the compost bin, Yuck. And you have to be ever so careful when feeding the birds as the blasted rats home in on that too.

Whats that saying? your never far from a rat or something like that... double yuck! :(

Ron...... you poor thing. I'm with others on this one I hate rats. A real nightmare. YUK YUK YUK :)>>>

Hope it's sorted very soon.

Definately metal bins though, plastic is just eaten into.

I keep all the animals feed in the house and take out when needed
Just been out to tuck the guineas in i was petrified seeing one! LOL

You have my sympathies Ron, we have rats every year! Over the years they've eaten spark plug leads on a car, made a lovely nest out of a tent that was in the garage & have eaten my piggies water bottles yet have never gotten into the hutches (thank god) but we have had them in the house & with mice too!
My food bins have tell-tale nibbles on them & the "rat-man" almost moved in at one point!
With one neighbour leaving left-overs out & the other having a pond & people throwing take-away leftovers everywhere it's no wonder. :)>>>

Good Luck with helping them to move on :)

we had suspected rats about 6 months ago and the pest bloke warned us about rabbits and guineas, they will just go for them.

yuck i hate rats! i am lucky where i live we have lots of cats hanging around and as yet in the last 3 years i have not seen 1 mouse or rat( a few hedgehogs and a possum)i hopr you have gotten rid of them

Really spooky, as I was on here to post a thread about mice! We've just come back from holiday and I've discovered that we have mice in the shed where the piggies live. I've seen droppings which are tiny so I'm assuming is mice. Should I try and get rid? And how? Help!

Kelly
