So as some of you will know, by total fluke I ended up with a stable trio of boys. For over 2 years they've lived together and are doing really well.

About a month and a half ago, Rainbow, usually the biggest of the boys had lost weight. I went away for a week, came back and didn't weigh them for a couple of weeks due to my own health. When I finally weighed them, he had lost 300g... (he did weigh 1050g before i went away, and i came back to 750g)

Well I panicked. An emergency vet appointment later, and the vet couldn't work it out. So I had to divide the cage so that Rainbow could have his own area, and I'd been monitoring his eating and drinking.

fast forward 6 weeks, and 4 vet appointments, he's gained most of the weight back, but still no answers as to what went wrong. During the separation, all 3 of my boys have been fighting to get the divider down. So today I decided to start the reintegration progress. 2 hours together this evening and no upsets, no fighting and no issues. They even spent a bit of time cuddling up in the hay together. Rainbow's been obviously sad and withdrawn while alone, so it was nice to see him happy and popcorning with his brothers again.

I've put the divider back in place for over night, its a C&C cage and I'm using 2 panels to divide it so they can still chat through the bars. I just dont want to come down in the morning to a blood bath.

I'm going to give them more time together tomorrow, basically going to put them together for as long as they are happy.

I will be keeping a close eye on Rainbow's weight over the coming months and if he starts losing again, I may have to separate him permanently and get a new friend for him. However, for the time being, things seem ok.

I know the risks, and I'm working closely with a guinea savvy vet and a friend who works at a local rescue to make sure things go as smothly as possible. and worse case senario, I am willing to separate and refried as needed.

We always advise otherwise but you are of course allowed to make your own decision.

When you bond them, it needs to be all or nothing. If you were not confident in leaving them together then you would have been better off postponing till you have a full day/plenty of time.

Each time they meet they have to restart the process because it was previously interrupted. When you put them together tomorrow, please leave them as long as possible in the neutral area. No hides, just a pile of hay and veg at the usual time. Thoroughly clean out their cage ready for them to move back in together. I’d leave them in the neutral area for a good 4 hours t least. If you want, you could even leave them there overnight. But please don’t separate them again and try again on another day.

Good luck and hope it does work out with no issues.

I know. Usually I would have just gone for an all or nothing and that was my plan until bed time. but I felt overnight was too risky. Maybe I'm just panicky or anxious.
At 7 this morning, I cleaned their secure floor space, so its nice an neutral, and going to have them out for the full day with supervision, to see how they get on. lots of water bottles and food, spread out

Academically I know how to bond Guinea pigs... I've done it loads before when I volunteered at a rescue... but never done it with my own, so i think the extra emotional attachment has set me really on edge.
You're right, I'd have been better waiting till today and doing it in one go. Still, everything is running smoothly this morning :)

🤞Hope the bonding goes well for the little fellas, hope they all get along together now

Good luck with everything ! Come on boys be friends forever 🥰

Glad it’s going well. I would give them several hours in the pen before moving them back into their home though. Make sure you rearrange it and clean thoroughly.

So forgot to comment last night. Really positive day yesterday. They stayed in their neutral space over night (the lower level of a 2 height cnc cage that's usually used to store the hay lol)

Everyone's still happy this morning, and under close supervision today

Little bit of reasserting dominance, but nothing to worry about. No nips or crys

Moved my work computer in with them to keep an eye today. And this evening its back into the main cage which will be deep cleaned first and have 3 of everything
