My G.Pigs love and eat lots of Readigrass as well as lots of hay. I wondered if there is any danger in feeding them plenty of Readigrass. I had 18 rescue G.Pigs c.10 years ago and fed them lots of Readigrass and didn't have any particular problem show up. They all had their own problems but no specific problem through the herd. I am wondering if I was lucky or if Readigrass is fine to feed in daily handfuls?

Some will say it is too high in calcium to feed a lot of (actually 0.55%) or the ratio of Ca:P is not balanced for piggies (actually 2:1) but I like to feed my lot a large handful between two once a day. I wouldn't use it as a hay replacement or feed in excess as it is rich compared to hay but it is a nice treat for them and great for putting weight on young or old pigs or to encourage those that have gone off their food due to ill health. I've actually found another chaff type feed - Thunderbrook healthy herbal chaff (recommended on the rabbit forum) which has other herbs added in and linseed oil too so I'm trying that mixed in with my readigrass - it smells divine.

Mine are growing youngsters and get an average handful between two of them daily but they eat lots of hay too. They have hay in their bedrooms but I put fresh hay in their hayrack as they pee n' poo in their bedrooms. I bought some 'Natures Own' Herbal Salad, Meadow Salad and Dandelion Salad and some of it smells delicious but they left it and ate the readigrass. Mind you I have tried them with fresh parsley and they looked at me like I was mad, the same with red pepper (not chilli). I suppose they will like what they will like! At least I now know it is high in calcium and will limit it accordingly. Thank you for your help. :)

:D Readigrass is just pure dried grass. According to the Hay Experts it is 28% fibre and 55% calcium. (£3.95 for 1 Kg) Proper fresh grass is very good for piggies so Readigrass should be too. Plus,as it is dried you don't have to worry about it going off!

It is too rich to be given freely. Fresh grass is different - because it has it's water content.

I only give readiness as a treat
