Hi

My 4yr old boar went to the vets yesterday. He has lost a lot of weight (250g) and wasn't really eating but drinking a lot and still pooping.

The vet checked his teeth and they are fine, felt his tummy which she said caused him discomfort and prescribed zantac to stimulate his gut as well as meloxidyl to offer pain relief. She also gave me critical care to give him and told me to bring him back in 4 days to see if he was any better, if not they would admit him to take blood etc.

This afternoon as I picked him up to syringe feed him I noticed that his tummy seems a lot bigger, a bit like a little balloon. His weight has gone up by over 100g as well which doesn't seem right as he can't have put that much weight back on so soon.

My worry is that he has bloat or something but I don't know anything about it and wouldn't have thought he would have lost so much weight with it although I may be wrong.

Can anyone offer any advice. Of course I will take him back to the vets if he is no better but I am worried as I cann't afford the fees (before anyone has a go at me for not having pets if you can't afford them, our circumstances have changed since we got the guinea pigs).

We lost his brother a few months ago to kidney failure and worry that We will lose him too

Hi I am sorry to hear all that has happened. Have you checked to see if there is a PDSA,RSPCA or blue cross in your area? They offer vet care for people on low incomes. It sounds like your little one has bloat and that is an emergency. He will need to see a vet right away. Hopefully somebody else will come along with more advice.

He saw the vet today who is really good and doesn't think he has bloat thankfully. He has increased his pain medication and has prescribed him epermide (sorry not sure if that's correct, havent got the bottle near me). Bought him home and gave him some veggies which he tucked into so will see how he goes.

Emeprid is a gut stimulant; you will get the same meds (zantac and a metacam based painkiller and a gut stimulant) for bloat as well. I am glad that he is better. Be careful with his food; he can have a tender digestion.

Is he pooing OK? Does his tummy appear bloated?

I think the medication you have is Emeprid which is often used alongside Zantac & Cisapride. Minky has been on all of these at the same time when she was having problems in December. I used an electric toothbrush (the vibrating kind) to massage her tummy while she laid on her back on my lap. This worked wonders & after 30 minutes or even more she would start doing lots of poos. I also gave her 1ml of Boots baby gripe-water after her veggies as well. Is he on antibiotics because these can often cause these type of problems. Just massaging his tummy gently by hand would give some sort of relief.
