Hello,

Our guinea pig Zelda has been having on going dental problems since Christmas Eve. She had her teeth filed down then without a general anthsetic and still could not manage to eat. ( we have been feeding her critical care every few hours each day and she has maintained her weight.)

She had her teeth filed again under general anthsetic yesterday. She can now gnaw and use her front teeth but is still not able to eat hard pellets or hay or vegetables that she use to eat.

How long should we give her to ‘recover’ from yesterday? We are continuing to feed her with critical care to ensure she doesn’t loose any weight.

Many thanks,

Sorry Zelda is going through the mill. Hope she starts eating her hay soon. Try cutting up veg into little matchstick pieces and hand feed her.

Thank you very much for replying. Will try the match stick size pieces.

Are you syringe feeding until she’s able to feed herself properly again?
You might like to think about pureeing veggies as you would for a baby as well
Hope Zelda recovers quickly

Morning,

Thank you for all your responses!

Still no luck with veggies but will have a good go at soaked pellets when being hand fed. We are still feeding her critical care through a syrgine to keep her weight up.

Hoping she hasn’t forgotten how to chew!

Many thanks for your support

@Lizzyb245 She could be in pain and so doesn't want to eat, or the dental work wasn't complete so she's still not able to eat for herself.

Keep up with the syringe feeding. When they're not eating for themselves we have to help them by keeping their digestive systems functioning with syringe food.

Offer softened nuggets and veg cut into small pieces. You can also cut the hay into smaller pieces if it helps. Dental pigs quite often like dry porridge oats so offer a bowl of that too.

The majority of dental pigs at TEAS start eating straight away after a dental, or at the least become interested in having a really good try. How is she in herself? Does she want to eat and can't? Or not interested?

Thank you for your advice!

She is very interested in her food and will have a good try, she can pick up the food but just can’t seem to process it in her mouth so drops it out. She can eat soft pellets that have been soaked in water and critical care off a spoon.

She is still her usual self and is moving and active.

Will see where we are up to after the weekend and get her back to the vets next week. Hopefully it will be just a case of giving her time! Fingers crossed.
Thank you for all
Your advice and support

Is she on any pain relief? How is it going today?

How is she doing today? Do you live anywhere near Northampton. There is the best guinea pig dental vet in the country there called Simon Maddock, Cat and Rabbit Clinic. I take my Ted there for conscious dentals and he is marvellous? If you are still having problems with feeding I would strongly recommend getting an appointment if you can get there, no referral needed, just get your vet to send on Zelda medical records.

Hello,
We are based in Manchester, so may be abit far to travel but we may well consider it.

We have had heard of a vet near us who has a good record with rodents!

Thank you for asking. She can now eat soggy pellets out of a bowl and isn’t reliant on us spoon feeding her. She is still
In critical care to get the fibre etc on her. She can’t eat veggies but we are pleased she is eating indpedently. She is still on pain relief.

We are hoping she just needs time to readjust but we don’t want it to get progressively worse or for her to be in pain or discomfort.

Thank you for all your advice, it has really helped

Hopefully Zelda is on her way to recovery. Just in case she gets dental problems again (in my experience, it takes quite a few times of dental treatment to correct the problem), consider going to Cat & Rabbit Care Clinic in Northampton to see Simon and Kim Maddock. They are the best when it comes to dental treatments. We have dental piggies as well (past and present) and we go straight to them for their treatments. We live in North Wales and the travel is always worth it.

Ooo it’s good to know that they are highly recommend and worth the trip.

Thank you

Thank you
We've just been today for the first time with Duke, he was in the same boat as Zelda! We're about 70 miles away but it was so, so worth the trip. Kim was fantastic, so knowledgeable and caring! Couldn't recommend them enough ❤️

I’d recommend Simon too - my Jack has dental problems but is much improved after a couple of visits to the Cat and Rabbit Clinic. Well worth the trek!

Simon and Kim are the reason that TEAS exists! We couldn't do what we do, without them! Simon really worked his magic with two dental piggies, that we took in over the weekend. The teeth were some of the worst he had ever seen, but they are both on the road to recovery now!
