My Guinea pigs hind legs are sligtly red and dryish looking. I keep her in care fresh and clean her poo twice a day but she tends to sleep where she pees. Could she be getting bumble foot? Also I rubbed a little olive oil on her heels in that ok?
Sorry to hear about your Guinea pig. I don't know the answer to your bumble foot question but I don't think the oil will do her any harm. Maybe post a picture of her feet so people can see? It might just be dry skin.
Dry skin can be moisturised with gorgeous guinea products if this is what she has. Is there any scabs/ open wounds? Bumble foot
Is more common in the front feet, and it sounds more like urine irritating her skin. I'd bathe them, dry fully and moisturise with some gorgeous guinea cream (sourced online). For now i would change the bedding where she sleeps a couple times a day and see if it resolves.
If theres any swelling/hot to touch/ cuts or scabs then i'd have her checkd by a vet, as these things can indicate infection.
Bumble foot is dark and scabby and there is usually swelling present as it is an infection - just google images for bumble foot and you will see what I mean - the back feet do sometimes tend to be slightly pinker than the front feet because there is more weight on the back end of a pig than the front.
I have a pig with pink coloured feet and they were slightly red. I had them checked at the last vet appointment I had and I was advised to do nothing with them. Only treat if it progresses to bumblefoot, so I would suggest a vet check before using ointments/creams etc.
I use a piece of vet bed under the house that he sleeps in, and since then his feet are normal pink again.
Thanks so much for the replies-she is housed on carefresh and I spot clean it twice a day. Would it be possible for someone to post a picture of what normal guine pig feet look like? I can't tell if it's bad or not or even if it is swollen because I am unsure of what her feet should look like . They are not super angry red, just a little and there seems to be a little dry skin . Have continued to rub olive oil and will get gorgeous Guinea pig products.
Everypigs feet are different and have different 'normals'... I'm assuming shes a pink nosed/ feet piggy? Heres some of my white coated/pink footed pigs feet! Some pics her feet are paler than others- thats because she has heart problems and poor circulation. I have just added them for a size comparison- the darker pink feet pictures are her normal/ healthy colouring.
It could be irritation from urine (a lot of pigs will pee and stand in it.) But remember that pigs with pink extremities (ears, noses, feet) can flush when warm, which can make those extremities look redder. I would use a moisturizer if you're concerned and keep an eye out for swelling, sores, or anything else that doesn't look quite right. In the UK I believe there are some moisturizers targeted directly at guinea pigs. I've used Lansinoh before on guinea pigs with irritated skin from urine scald with a piggie with a UTI.
