My guinea has developed a sore at the corner of his eye - we have only recently lost one guinea and I'm worried that taking this one to the vets is going to cause him stress - also I'm not sure what anti- biotics are safe for a guinea and would like some advice before I take him to see them. Help ! ?

GuineaLynx has a list of all the unsafe medications and safe medications.
I would take your piggy to the vet, I understand your worry though, always best to get things treated as soon as is possible.

Welcome to the forum. :)

I'll find the link for you.

Definitely take to the vet they can prescribe all sorts of eye drops including anti biotic ones that are suitable for them . Our big Frank suffers with eye problems and has drops on a daily basis, he is quite happy to have them and they are simple to give. Hope all goes well.

Thank you for your quick replies - I'll take him now - poor old Bubble - it's probably the stress of losing Squeak and meeting his new friend Taffty ! No problems for 3 years and now everything at once ! Thank you again - you've re-assured me and I'm happier about going now .

Poor you! Is it the conjunctiva (the skin around the eyeball) just inside the eye or is it the area just outside the eye?

In the first case, you are bound to get eye drops/gel and in the second, you are likely dealing with ringworm or another fungal infection that won't need an antibiotic anyway, but in any case, you will need to see a vet to get a proper diagnosis. Neither is a life threatening condition, so your trip should go well if you can stay calm yourself for his sake.

What did your other piggy die of and what meds was he prescibed? Where exactly in Powys are you?

Bloat and I'm not sure what the anti biotics were - he was giving the anti-biotics before they realised it was bloat.I disposed of them after he died, but could check what they were when I take Bubble . I'm in Brecon. Thank you for your advice - it's much appreciated.

I am very sorry; severe bloat can kill even with the best of care and prompt correct treatment and meds! If you are dealing with a blockage that is building up, then there is often very little you can do if you cannot move the block. I have lost one of mine to gassy bloat this year, as have many of our members that have owned a number of piggies over the years. Bloat or blockage is one of the things that you really do not want to be up against! HUGS! :(
PS: You are welcome to post a tribute in our Rainbow Pets section any time that feels right for you. It is always a bad time when another piggy falls ill soon after one of your has died and it takes a leap of faith, especially when you had to pts (put to sleep).

Please have a look at our recommended piggy savvy vets locator and see whether there is one within your reach. I'm not sure whether there is one in the Cardiff area, if you are not happy with your local vets. http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/pages/guinea-pig-vet-locator/

Your closest good guinea pig rescues would be Glynneath in South Wales (who sadly have stopped offering dating single boars at the rescue recently), Windwhistle Warren by Cheltenham or a couple of smaller rescues in the Bristol area. All these rescue we can guarantee for rehoming only healthy and quarantined piggies. Several offer to date any single/bereaved boars with rescue boars at the rescue, which is the safest way of rebonding bereaved boars, as you only come home with a companion if they get on. However, you want to make sure that your bereaved boy is sorted first! ;)
