Poor Red, he's really struggling to walk. I can't even work out which leg is the problem. I've reduced his cage size and put his hay outside his hidey. I've managed to get a vet appointment with one of our favourite vets later. This vet is quite new here
but really good with guinea pigs, this is the 3rd piggie we've taken to her in the last month, good job we like her!
Please send Red healing vibes, hopefully it's just a strain.

Oh no! Poor Red and poor you, sending lots of healing vibes, hope your vet can find out what Red’s problem is x

The vet thinks it's a strain, the left back leg is a bit swollen and he didn't like her extending it. She's convinced it's not broken but if he's no better by Monday we are to go back for an xray. I don't see how he could have broken it as there's nothing for him to fall off of or catch it in in the cage. Red runs full pelt everywhere though. Luckily he loves Metacam so it won't be any trouble to give him a dose at the same time as Rusty!

All the best!

It's generally easier for piggies with a propelling back leg sprain than on a weight bearing front leg but sprains can take anything from days to a few weeks to disappear, depending on the severity and whether they aggravate it again once they feel better. You can't tell them to go easy after all...

Got up this morning to a gunky/weepy eyed Red. This is how Rusty's illness started last week. Rusty had a vet appointment for this morning, luckily I didn't cancel it yesterday, we took Red instead. Red had a very thorough health check on Friday so she was able to compare his respiratory sounds. There's no difference there but he does have a mild scratch on his eye. He still has a slighty stiff leg but he's moving around okay now. We now have Sulfatrim, Metacam and Chloamphenicol. Sulfatrim because he has a slight almost inaudable upper respiratory sound that she wouldn't normally be worried about but in light of what happened to Rusty she wanted to do more than instruct to keep an eye on it. Red is booked to go back for a further check on Friday. I'm keeping a very close eye on the others.

Sending massive hugs and lots of love to you and the boys xx

Red had a check up this morning. He is walking okay but his leg is still sore when manipulated so we are carrying on the Metacam for a bit longer. His respiratory sounds have improved but not 100% so Sulfatrim to be continued for another week, then rechecked and if still not better he will be going into the vets for scans etc. His eye is looking much better so we are to continue the gel for another couple of days and can then stop. Poor Red, everytime I approach the cage he looks at me like 'what do you want now'.

I'm really worried about his respiratory problems to be honest after what happened with Rusty, the symptoms are so similar. If it wasn't for his limp and eye poke I wouldn't have known there was a problem there. I hope we've got the right antibiotic and have caught it quick enough this time.

I understand that with what happened to Rusty you will be feeling that way, but he’s certainly in good hands with you and your vets. How is he in himself ? (Apart from being up with your interventions! )

Thanks @VickiA I'm feeling a bit of a rubbish owner at the moment to be honest. Red's not lost any weight and is behaving normally but so was Rusty until he was put on Baytril, day 2 knocked out his appetite and then despite syringe feeding he went down hill rapidly.
Rusty didn't lose any weight either, he actually put some on! I know a week of antibiotics isn't long for them to work which is why the vet isn't sedating him yet for tests but my head won''t stop going round and round with the what ifs.

Aw don't knock yourself, you're a brilliant owner
Its just that the problems you've had are hitting you all at once :(

Maybe the limp & eye poke were because he was feeling unwell anyway, or if his immune system was a bit low he'd probably be more susceptible to the respiratory problems?
They're so good at hiding their illnesses :(

Would disinfecting & using Rusty's nebuliser help Red at all?
Hopefully the sulfatrim is working away in the background & doing a slow but sure job of curing him?

The girls & I all send healing vibes by the truckload for a full & speedy recovery to the gorgeous Red :luv:

Luv & a big hug for you too
