hi not a great first post, but if you want rehome a piggie, what type of home check in required?is it the same with rabbits?

Basically I think they just have a look at where the piggy will be kept, and have a chat to you about the piggy and it's care.

I've never had a home check myself so I could be totally wrong but this is what I always expected them to entail.

I'm sure someone with more knowledge will be along and give you a much better answer about your question soon but I just thought I would try to help at least :)

Home checks are usually seen as compulsory practice with most rescues. It's just a case of checking that the setup you have prepared for your chosen piggies is suitable, particularly the size and location of the cage/hutch, and making sure that any necessary protection against the elements and predators have been considered.

The home checker will try to get an idea of your knowledge of guinea pig care, may ask you a few questions about what you intend to feed them and your ideas for exercising/floor time for the piggies, just to make sure that you know what you're doing when you start out with piggies. If you have done your research and have got a good basic knowledge of guinea pigs, it would come across quite obviously in the large majority of cases if the setup is appropriate.

I'm always very nervous before a home check, even though I KNOW that I have nothing to fear and should pass with flying colours. mallethead

When you contact a rescue, it might be good to ask them what they would recommend in terms of hutch/cage and run, so you won't have any problems at all. I did that when I rehomed Nerys and Nia from the RSPCA in May.

We also have some rescues active on here that will rehome further afield, provided you can pass a local home check and organise a pick up. The same goes with the RSPCA. My girls were from Walsall RSPCA, but I was checked out by the Coventry branch.

Best of luck!
