How many people on here have rescued their guinea pigs from a bad situation?

My boyfriend rescued my boy Parker who sadly passed away 3 weeks ago
Four years ago he was doing some work on a couples house one morning he heard wheeking coming from the shed at the bottom of the garden, the man says its his grandsons piggy who had been in that shed for nearly six months on his own in the dark in a cage no bigger than a hamster cage, and they only went in 2 times a week to throw food in.

My boyfriend told him that's no way for a piggy to live and asked the man if he could let him out to run about the garden for a bit which he did.
For the next three days my boyfriend would go into the shed and bring the piggy out to run around and he would sit on the lawn with him for an hour before starting work.

One night the man says did my boyfriend know anyone who would want the piggy if not he was going to take it to the fields and set it free, my boyfriend was horrified and says i'll take him home tonight so that's how I ended up with guinea pigs, 5 months later we got Parker a little mate 9 weeks old Junior he was soooo happy to have a buddy I was crying lol.

Oh god hes adorable. Why would anyone release an animal that isn't from the wild into the wild? Guinea pigs are obviously domestic. It sickens me. I'm glad your boyfriend became close with the piggie and eventually rescued him.

RIP Little guy. It sounds like he had such a wonderful life with you both.

I don't really have any rescue stories.
Matthew, the piggie in my avatar was from an animal rescue after being abandoned outside in a cage with two female guinea pigs.

Romano, the black piggie in the background on the left was technically a rescue but not really. I just noticed him terrified in a pet shop curled up in the same corner every time I walked in, in a cage no bigger than 2 foot with a ton of rabbits and baby piggies. The rest were running around but he was frozen terrified. I bought him home and for a long time he was so scared but he eventually grew to trust me and made friends with Athur who sadly attacked him when he hit puberty, Corey who was too lustful for Romano and kept uh... gooing on Romano so I had to cut it out and eventually Matthew, the piggie above and they've lived together happily for a long time now.

I rescued 2 of my former piggies, Barty and Bella, from a faeces encrusted hutch with no food and an algae covered water bottle. Their hutch had a heavy plastic cover across the front despite it being 25 degrees C outside. I moved them into a hutch 4 times bigger than the one they were in and they lived with me for 3 happy years before passing away. This is them after being bathed and fed properly for a couple of months. ;)

It's lovely to hear that all of these piggies found such loving homes after their awful ordeals.
Florrie and Inca are my rescue piggies and the ones in my avatar. I believe they were part of the 285 pig rescue and were taken in at Hazelcroft Rescue. They are both such wonderful piggies who are loved very much.

Awww they were gorgeous x

Yep Parker was a special little boy my b/f had a soft spot for him, that was his boy.

My boy went from rags to riches lol he was such a good natured boy and all the kids in the street loved him and Junior they were always at my door asking to see them, but they especially loved Parker because he was so laid back he would approach you not run away from you. Everyone who meet him fell in love with him they called him the little boy with the big personality.

When Junior got home from having bladder stone surgery the kids made him a get well soon card it was so cute.

As Parker was taking his last breaths I heard my boyfriend say to him sleep tight little guy, my best friend i'll miss you.....I was breaking my heart this is the first time ive seen my b/f upset and we have been together 15 yrs.

Junior was finding it hard the first two weeks without Parker (his hero) he was Parker daft constanly shouting for him but I think he now realises his best bud isn't coming back.DSC06718.webp

My Piggy Hodgins was rescued from the petstore and I know ppl say do not buy petstore pets but if we dont help them no one else will, anyway i say rescued because this petstore was apaling i mean no water, food or anything luckyly the petstore has been closed because of animal abuse but anyway when i walked in there he was so close to death and i could not leaven him there plus he was just a lil baby and i figured he deserved a chance to live anyway i go him help from a vet and hes healthy has a horse and loves his mommy.

We all have our favourites but still love our piggy's as much as the other x

Junior my 3 year old is my favourite he has been through a lot surgery for an abscess 2 bladder stone surgery, a large hole on the side of his nose and each time he bounces back I call him AP Junior (accident prone Junior) lol my boyfriend calls him balls of steel hahallll 005.webp

I appeared to rescue mine from a rescue centre, that I have since heard is over crowded and the piggies are fed on rabbit food. Rumour also has it, that all the females are pregnant at the rescue, and they buy in! The web site says they need I.D. For you to adopt, but they did not even ask me to give my contact details. I was not shown around. It was another rescue that alerted me to the situation there after one of my adopted piggies had to be PTS due to pneumonia.

@Toffee I think I know the rescue you mean, is it near me? If so I have heard the same things.
@babydoll your boyfriend did a lovely thing! So kind hearted it seems like Parker won the piggy lottery!
I have had some very poor condition piggies handed to me by work colleagues/acquaintances. The worst was a pig who i agreed to look after for a work colleague when she went on holiday only to find after she drove off 3 poorly pigs one of whom died later that evening before we could get her to the vets.

I still feel awful about that and because I cant remember her name. She was a smooth coated lilac. I kept the others for the rest of their lives.

I also had a chinese hammie o my friend found in a box on the street, she was suckling a baby who was dead

@Goth Mummy Yes. It is in Nottingham. I am in Derby. It appeared on the East Midlands News saying that they had received soooo many abandoned guineas and appealing for new homes. I got twitchy about the place when she did not take my details and she did not show me around. I emailed her to say that they had settled in to their new home after a few days, and I did not get a reply. She did not give a toss, once She had got rid of them, where as when I was asking questions before collecting them, she replied instantly. When Toffee died, my twitch got worse and I phoned another rescue, locally, although they are not just for piggies, and they did not need me to tell them where I got Toffee from. They said at least I had saved my other 2.

I adopted my boy, Nelson from a local 'rescue'. I have no doubt that she was genuinely trying to look after them and find new homes, but they were overcrowded and Nelson was in a bit of a sorry state when we took him home. He had sores on all his feet, severely overgrown toenails, and he was noticeably 'flabby' from lack of exercise - he didn't even have sufficient space to run about in his house.

Within three weeks of living with Freddie, his muscles really improved and he was much fitter! Always was a big lad, but he was muscly and you could actual feel his muscles when you lifted him, whereas before he was like a school bean bag!
