Hi everyone, i have been really nervous of saying this to you al(not sure why).

After much discussion my o/h and kids we have decided to set up a small rescue. I have the space/time as i only do Avon and Phoenix which works nicely around things. also the money.

It has been an ambition of mine since i was little and after the thread Rebecca started got me thinking that the time is right now.I foster rabbits for the RSPCA and have their full backing and support.(we never get in gp for the rspca

Please don't have a go at me about it, i will do my best for the piggies. i have some of my own and they will stay mine as i could never part with them.

Question to all you rescues is do you advertise? Would i be stupid to put an ad on Preloved saying i would take in unwanted g.p and put notices up in shops or should i just tell my local vets?

thankyou x

Well all i can say is THANKYOU on behalf of any future piggies who come to your place xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>
What a wonderful thing you're about to embark on, i'm sure it will be trying and even difficult at times :{
Have a word with a few of the other rescue people on here, i'm sure they'll be thrilled to speak to you and advise :)
I admire you and again i have to say thanks to you, OH and the kids xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx It's people like you that really make a difference in caring for our little lost and forgotten piggies xoxoxoxo

I'm not sure why you're nervous either, don't be. There was some great advice on Rebecca's thread. I'm sure lots of people on here will be very helpful.
I have recently put notices up, with photos, in some local vets' surgeries to ask for new homes for rescued piggies. Figured people going into vets were quite responsible. Maybe they could help. Others could advise about adverts to take in unwanted piggies, I foster so not really sure on that. From what I have read on here though, people seem to get to know, and they can want to hand in quite large quantities of piggies, as Helen and Graham have had recently, and the 'Preston Piggies'.
Good Luck whatever you decide.
Where abouts are you?
xx

Don't be nervous! The more the merrier! I foster and it is rewarding but I don't have a big enough house to do a massive rescue! Maybe one day!

Good luck with it, keep us posted on how things go. x

oh brilliant, what a lovely thing to do, good luck for it and I'm sure you and all the future animals that come into your care will be happy and well looked after x

No reason to be nervous, you know you are fully prepared and that is what matters. Whether you help 1 or 100 animals, it all helps.

Just looked up, I'm only 35 miles from you, maybe if you get any piggies that catch my eye I will come and visit! :)

:))You'd be more than welcome to come and visit my zoo:))

I think it's an excellent idea and with some rescues sadly closing it's refreshing to hear that someone wants to start one up.

There are lots of us on here that run our own rescues from home and funded by ourselves too. Whilst many of us only take in a small number of piggies at any one time collectively I do feel we make a difference. I think it's great too when people specialise in one or two particular type of animals, as their experience is invaluable.

Good luck with all your plans, any of us on here I'm sure will be only to happy to advise you and support you.

I can't think of everyone who rescues on here but here are just a few of them ............

Hels, Sokel, SophieW, Cavylover, Vicky, Honeybunnies, MarthaandMaud, guineapigrehome, Boureki, nutmeg and myself.

Good luck and let us know how you get on. :)

You shouldn't be nervous about telling us - I think it's wonderful that you are embarking on this new venture.......as I'm sure all the future piggies that come your way will be too.

I'm sure all the other rescue members on here will be able to give you all the advice you need.

Good luck!

Good luck to you, it's a wonderful thing you're doing :<>. I'm in the process of starting a resuce up as well and am trying to make sure I have certain things in place before I tell anyone officially. I've had some great advice from SophieW - who I foster for and what I'm going to do is put a leaflet up in the local vets to start with and then once things get going I'll put ads in pet shops - especially the ones that sell piggies (not that I think there's anythingwrong with that for the shops that are responsible - whoever they are) and take it from there. My two main concerns are that I'll be swamped (& unable to say no) and that I'll end up keeping loads cos I'll be a nightmare when people come forward to rehome them and I turn into an interrogator!.
I'm sure lots of people on the site will be able to provide loads of help and information - I've learnt loads already - so all the very best to you

oh my goodness, why would anyone be mad at you? all i can say is a massive THANK YOU for deciding this. you are a gem, you truely are

What a wonderful thing you will be doing Sue, THANKYOU from me too and I am sure we can be here for you for advice from other rescues as well a shoulder to cry on (be aware there will be very sad times too).

I think one day in the future, I will set up a small rescue too but until then I volunteer and help raise funds where I can....every tiny bit helps ;)

I wish you all the very best and look forward to hearing how it goes. not sure about pre loved, if it were me I wouldn't as you will be inundated very very quickly but others may advise differently. Are you going to set up a website?

Hi good luck sue i wish you all the best. even if you only help a few piggies it will be worthwhile, just don't take on too much too soon!

i too have been planning to set up my own rescue but havn't put a notice on here for the same reason! over on the rabbits united forum they seem to give people a really hard time when they say they are thinking of setting up a rescue. They say your life will not be your own, you may never go on holiday again, the financial and emotional costs are enormous, etc etc. they really try to put people off! i don't quite understand it really, i know some people take on too much and then it all goes wrong but if nobody ever had the courage to have a go nothing would ever be achieved.

One other thing! i have some rescue pigs that i need to advertise. I have been putting it off but i know i have to let them go so i can help more!

I'm not sure the best way to word adverts, does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm going to put up adverts in the local vets but not on preloved as i want to keep the rehoming local so i can homecheck!

i totally agree about the rabbit forum, i think that's why i was scared as if i had put it on there i would have been shouted down.

It has opened my eyes to how lovely this forum is, i hardly ever go on the Rabbit forum as all they seem to do it argue!

You may have already seen this link but there is some good advice on here - worth a read anyway http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=28420

My advice is to take your time setting everything up before you "open".

Get a "surrender form" and an "adoption form" printed out first too, saves scrabbling around later on. You are more than welcome to visit my website and utilise my forms if it's of any help.

Get your hutches and suppliers lined up too and make sure you have enough of everything, water bottles, bowls etc.

By all means print up a small leaflet and drop it into every vet - I just went through my yellow pages and posted every single vet and petshop and boarding kennels an A5 poster with a sticky asking them to put it up on their notice board.

I personally wouldn't bother with any of the Free ads type adverts. Use guineapigrehome website and of course any animal related forums.

Don't worry - if you're there people will find you - but remember it takes a long time to build up a good reputation - you won't go global for a while yet :))

Regarding the negative comments from other people don't be put off. It is of course true that many rescues start up and close within a very short time, it's not easy to stay the course but it's your rescue and you must do what suits you.
