Yesterday my guinea pig Corduroy developed a small patch of flaky white skin on his ear. It looks like dry dandruff. He has a vet appointment made for Saturday and can possibly be squeezed in sooner if it gets much worse, but the vet didn't sound too concerned when I described it. Does anyone whose pigs have had ringworm remember what it looked like at the very beginning? This is like a dry patch of skin that is flaking and it isn't red or raw at all, and not circular. The vet said it sounded fungal but not like ringworm since it hasn't grown since yesterday and apparently ringworm would likely have doubled in size? He said to separate him from his buddy and keep an eye on it and wash my hands every time I touch him, but I can't help being super super worried. He is acting his normal, hyper self and hasn't been itching at all.

I'll try to take a picture when I can catch him (he's zooming around having floor time currently)

You may find our ringworm guide (with pictures) helpful. It also has got all the hygiene tips you are looking for: Ringworm: Hygiene And Pictures

There are many more forms of fungal, which are a lot less transmittable and aggressive. Just use common sense and good hygiene.

@Wiebke thank you! I've kept them together as they squeal and cry when they're apart.

I've just noticed that my other pig, Sylvester, has a bit of a raspy "voice" and I'm in double panic mode. I managed to score them a double appointment with the vet tomorrow afternoon. They're both popcorning all over the room right now but I can't help but panic, especially having recently lost a piggie very suddenly. I called 3 different vets and couldn't find them an appointment for today :(

This is maybe a stupid question, but what do people usually take their guinea pigs to the vet in? I used to have a pet store cage for transporting my sickly pig, but I've given it away since he passed.

Please calm down - as your two boys are both lively and fine in themselves, there is nothing to worry.

A pet or cat carrier is usually best, but I have also turned up with my piggies in a cardboard box or even just wrapped in a towel with the one that suddenly started bleeding heavily just before my local vets were closing and we had to rush her across (PS: Taffy did survive her bladder trauma and the vet stayed on extra to see her).
