On Wednesday morning, my beautiful Boswell was having trouble breathing, so I had him to the vet as soon as they opened. The vet recommended an X-ray to determine if he either had a URI (upper respiratory infection) or another issue, as each would have required different treatment. A URI would require antibiotics, while if it was something else, antibiotics would be no good. Anyway, I left him at the vet and went to work. A few hours later I had a phone call to say his breathing was worse. The X-ray revealed he had fluid in and outside of his lungs, the vet couldn’t even get a clear image of his heart because of this. The vet administered an anti-fluid injection and provided him with oxygen. I rushed to the vet after she called, leaving work immediately, but Boswell passed away minutes before I arrived. Not being able to say goodbye has left me heartbroken.

The vet wasn’t able to pinpoint what happened. She said it was most likely acute (sudden) heart failure, which can happen suddenly and without warning in guinea pigs. As many of you know, I had Boswell to the vet just last Friday due to a foot injury - I found him limping that morning (thought to be a sprain from playing). At that appointment, the vet also checked his overall health, including his heart, and I remember her exact words: ā€œhis heart sounds fineā€. I’ve been replaying that over and over, trying to understand how he went from being fine (other than the foot) to passing away from fluid in and outside his lungs just a few days later. I am just at a loss for words.

Rest in peace, my gorgeous Boswell. You have taken a piece of my heart with you that will never return. You were a special boy. You had the most charming and hilarious personality, you brought so much joy to anyone who came near you. I know they say you shouldn’t have favourites but everyone knew you were mine. I’m just sorry you didn’t get to live a full life, you were too young to be taken from us and this is what hurts me the most. You deserved many more years of popcorning and cuddles and comfort and joy. I hope you find peace over the rainbow bridge.

You have left me behind four of your children: Percy, Blue, Polly, and Zola. In this, I find great comfort. Percy, your first and oldest son, was just a baby when I adopted you both from your lovely previous owner - a young girl who loves guinea pigs just as much as I do. Then your youngest children, Blue, Polly, and Zola, who were born recently to my Paola in our home after you somehow found your way into her cage and made your mark ! I promise to take care of all four of your amazing children for the rest of their lives. Your legacy will live on through them.

Boswell was more than just a pet, he was family. I am a huge animal lover, and this shows the most through my pet guinea pigs. Boswell was picked up by a pet crematorium service, and the man who came to collect him said to me, while in my living room: ā€œthis is the hardest part of having pets… looking after them is the easy bitā€. I won’t ever forget his words. To any of you reading this who has lost a pet, I send love to you and you are not alone. The pain is real and you are allowed to take time to grieve your own way.

Oh my sweet Boswell, it’s going to be so tough without you but you are in my heart forever. Until I see you again… šŸ¤

So sad. The unexpected loss is the hardest. Play well over the bridge, beautiful Boswell 🐾🌈
