Junior Guinea Pig
I posted a couple days ago about my young guinea pigs, Charlotte and Holly, passing away. I’m absolutely heartbroken to say that Harriet has gone to join them.
Harriet seemed healthy yesterday, but this morning she was staggering around and then fell over and lay there, not moving. I immediately rushed her to the emergency vet, but there was nothing more they could do. She was just lying there twitching her ears every so often. She refused to eat or drink anything and wouldn’t respond to critical care syringe fed.
The vet suspected that there was something poisonous in the hay and that’s what killed Charlotte and Holly. I had suspected this myself and threw out all the hay and bought more as soon as I found Charlotte and Holly, but Harriet must’ve already ingested it.
Harriet was clearly distressed and suffering, so I made the difficult choice to euthanize her.
She and her sister were my very first guinea pigs and I’ll hold her forever in my heart.
I can’t help but feel like I somehow could’ve prevented this. I should’ve brought her and Sylvia into the vet for a look over as soon as I found Holly and Charlotte dead, but I thought a little check up could wait until later in the week.
I do still have Sylvia, and she was prescribed medication in case she ate some of the hay too. She seems very active and healthy but I still feel like I’m going to lose her too.
RIP my lovely Harriet, I will never forget you and will always miss you
