Hello as some of you may be aware my Guinea pig has been taken to the vet as she isn't using her back legs properly. she is currently on Metacam but the vet asked as an option of having an x-ray to which I said yes but the guinea pig will have to be under anaesthetic which really concerns me. Has anybody had any problems with their guinea pig with anaesthetic? I know she will have to have the x-ray but I can't help but worry. :help:

if conscious can't be done then a light sedation can be used. this is what our vets do. are your vets cavy savvy/exotics? if not, i would switch.

there is always a risk with any sedation or ga, but with a qualified exotics vet, the risks will be alot less. :)

I dont think so, just a general vets practise. I may sound a bit dumb but would "Gas" be better than having an injection.

i would really really recommend that you find an exotics vet. they will beable to know exactly what they're doing and beable to tell you all the info you need. they can manage the sedations and ga's better depending on the animal. it's obviously your decision but it worries me so much when people let a non-exotics vet treat their pigs. i know some are willing to learn but these usually refer with an exotics vet close by if they aren't experienced. i don't think people realise how little training these non-exotics vets have (sometimes it's a days course!) and it just worries me alot. i know there are always risks with anything but the risks are so greatly reduced with a vet who is highly trained in small animals. they do this day in day out. anyway, sorry for the essay and good luck for your piggy. :)

Yes, you could lightly sedate with Gas as opposed to a full with GA injection. Where about do you live we may be able to suggest a cavy savy vet nearby

All of my piggies have been xrayed whilst fully conscious - there isn't really a need to put them under GA unless they need to be put on their backs.

I suggest going to an exotics vet. I go to mike Morfett @city vets who's won four times in the exotics section of UK vet of the year x
