Rodentology Course

I haven't but I know that some people did.

I was thinking of it but was lucky enough to be offered the opportunity to volunteer for a while at a piggy clinic at a vets instead and the lady who runs it has been training me over the last year or so. She is what was once known as a rodentlogist but has moved away from the CCT and calls herself a Health and Welfare Specialist and works with vets. The only bit of training she had from Vedra was the dental course and she does not do any dental work now, apart from the odd check at clinic, leaving the actual work to the vets. She was trained by a friend of Peter Gurney and has done her own research over the years plus has 20 odd years of piggy experience so I am lucky to have the opportunity to be trained by her, especially as she has a vast amount of knowledge on skin issues, bladder issues and heart issues.

I have also looked at it but after contacting them was put off by lack of info about the course. I didn't want to part with a lot of money without asking questions and answers were a bit sporadic to be honest with you. So put it on hold for now.

I can't comment on that, had heard she was retiring though and spending more time away with family so think the CCT is being run by someone else at the moment but not sure who.

The man I spoke to said he spoke on behalf of Vedra and this was last year. I hadn't heard she was fierce though but people take people differently.

It would give you the basics for looking after your pigs and spotting problems but won't necessarily give you any up to date medical knowledge as she does not work with a vet.

I agree with Helen after emailing them I decided to put it on the back burner. At the moment couldn't justify the money as a lot of its what I already know. And wouldn't further what I want to do

I think a rodentology course is better suited to animal professionals looking to further their knowledge and also have proof of what they know in the form of a certificate where as now with the wonderful thing like the internet most things an owner needs to know are readily available through basic research or even buying the odd guinea pig related book, there are some good ones out their more medically orientated. But thats just my opinion i suppose :)

If you really wanted to do it, I think the first part is cheaper and would probably give you the basics.

Id be interested in doing a course but it wouldnt be of benefit for me to have a certificate so I currently stick to reading a lot on forums and learning through my own experience, oh and grilling my vet everytime I'm there haha :D
