Whilst Julie was in hospital I got to know our boys a bit better, and coupled with the small photoshoot we did last weekend I thought I'd give a small run down of our Rogues Gallery:
Rogue Leader - Dylan
Aka Mr. Dylan, Mr. D, or Dustbin Dylan
Age: Unknown
Being our oldest, and most senior piggie, Dylan, despite his head tilt, is most definitely the king pig. He's the most vocal at feeding time, clambering up the bars to try and get to the food bowl the second he hears us coming up the stairs and will eat almost everything (well apart from courgette!). Although he's turned in to a bit of a grumpy old man at times he's one of our most affectionate pigs, once we've caught him, and will happily sit on our laps for hours without even think about peeing on you. He also loves his snuggle bed, spending hours sitting in it, which is good because with his head tilt he often has "down days" where he just needs to hide away. There's also a saying in our house... "Everyone loves Dylan"!
Rogue Two - Pepe
Aka Peps, Pepster or simply "P"
Age: Just over 3 years
Poor old Pepe, he's never fully overcome his fear of human hands. He's been with us now over two years and still sometimes runs away at the sight of the hands coming in to the cage to pick him up. He's such a mummy's boy, he really missed Julie whilst she was in hospital, and loves curling up on Julie's legs for a cuddle. He's been a wonderful surrogate dad to Leo, well most of the tme anyway, and they both get on really well together, sharing their snuggle bed in totally "un-boar like" ways. We've only ever heard him wheek three times, he let's all the others get on with that and is incredibly patient at feeding time. He's now the lightest of our indoor pigs, not because he's lost weight, it's just that all the others have put on more! He also hates, and I mean HATES, bath time!
Rogue Three - Leo
Aka Little Leo or Baby Leo (despite being bigger than Pepe now)
Age: About 19 months
Got as a pal for Pepe (who desperatley wanted company) Leo has been the perfect companion to him, accepting that Pepe will always be in charge but sticking up for himself when necessary (without ever resorting to attacking him). He's come on so much form the 4 week old mini-pig we got, yet he'll always be seen as the baby of the group despite weighing more than Pepe now. He's not the most affectionate of piggies, he really doesn't like being stroked much, but he's inquisitive, yet timid at the same time, huddling up to Pepe when he gets frightened. He also loves clean bedding, he goes absolutely popcorn crazy when he first goes in to a freshly cleaned cage. He also seems to like licking my hand for some reason!
Rogue Four - Boomer
Aka Boomsy
Age: Just under 2 years
How can I sum up Boomer... oh yes, he's M.A.D. ! He thinks he's a puppy for a start, loves his head being scratched and is the most relaxed piggy we have, and the only one who sleeps with his eyes shut (normally with his head resting against his bowl in the most uncomfortable looking of positions). Despite now being our heaviest piggy he's the most athletic piggy we have, being able to bound up our stairs faster than I can and is our second most vocal boar at feeding time, also clambering (and trying to chew through) the metal cage whilst waiting for his food. He'll let us know when he's out of hay by banging his head against his hay bowl and drinks like a fish! He's definitely a people piggy, not getting on that well with any of the other boys, although he'll quite happily sit at the bars next to Xander for company when he wants to. He's also the pretender to Dylan's crown as king pig!
Rogue Five - Xander
Aka "X"
Age: Just over a year
Our only non-rescue pig, I "rescued" him from a tiny cage he was sharing with a large bunny in a branch of a well known gardening retail chain who supposedly didn't sell animals any more! He's come on so well, wheeking away at feeding time and now even lets me stroke his head whilst in the cage where before he'd just run away. He's our burrower. He will insist on hiding under his fleece for no reason whatsoever and as such is our messiest pig - I hate cleaning his cage out - yet will happily sit on our laps once he's out of his cage and so far is only one of two pigs (the late Oscar being the other) who hasn't nipped me (or in Blaze and Alan's case bitten down hard on me). He also loves his hay and popcorns away whilst I dish it out to the other boys, which tends to mean he gets his last so I can watch him at it. I just wish he'd open his mouth, if it wasm't for the fact he has to use it to eat and drink I'd be convinced it was stuck shut.
Rogue Six - Bear
Aka Squishy Bear or Big Bad Bear (the Bad being ironic I might add, like Little John)
Age: Just over 2 years
Bear is definitely one of Julie's favourite piggies but for some reason, all 5 boars we've tried to bond him with (Dylan, Boomer, Xander, Denny & Alan) seemed to have taken an instant dislike to him. We think he gives off mixed signals as he so desperately wants a friend, but as soon as you put someone with him he starts rumbling away and scenting and we think it puts them off. He spends half of his time sitting next to Dylan between the bars (Dylan will happily be friends with any pig as long as there is a divider between them) or in his snuggle bed which, like Dylan, he adores. He gets braver and braver every day and is finally starting to wheek for his food with the others. He's also our most handsome of pigs (as the picture shows)
Rogue Seven - Denny
Aka : Little D or 'Den Den'
Age: About 14 months
Along with his brother, Alan, Denny (named after William Shatner's character in Boston Legal) was "rescued" by Julie and I from a woman who tried to sell them on eBay. Originally we were going to try and re-home them, once the wounds from their fight had healed, but they've become such a part of our piggy clan that I decided I couldn't let them go. They live in our heated shed outside as we haven't got the room to put two extra single pigs upstairs with the others - if only they could get along together. Apart from the long hair on his back, he reminds me so much of Scampy (the first piggy we lost to the Rainbow Bridge), not just in looks but in some of his mannerisms. He's a very excitable piggy, and when we put him and Alan together for play time, it's normally Denny's over-zealous playing that winds Alan up and leads us to having to separate them. He's appears to be vulnerable to the odd bit of fungal, mainly on his nose, which is another reason I didn't want to re-home him. He's also got the longest whiskers I've ever seen on a piggy.
Rogue Eight - Alan
Aka : Um, well actually he's just Alan!
Age: About 14 months
Alan (named after James Spader's character in Boston Legal) is the other half of the "Ebay Piggies". Unlike his brother he's a lot more mellow, but still enjoys himself at play time with his brother for about 20 minutes, before he gets bored and let's his brother know it! He's such a fussy eater, he doesn't like corn, beans, peppers, any fruit and isn't overly fussed on greens or kale either so normally ends up with an extra slice or two of carrot or cucumber to compensate. He's a very pretty pig, the only crested pig we have, and really looks more like a female piggy, especially considering he's a lot smaller than any of the indoor pigs. He's also given me the worst bite I've ever had from a piggy... at bath time I might add... and is also the "wriggliest" of all our boys.
Honourary mention:
Our three Rainbow Bridge piggies:
Scampy: Sweet and affectionate with Julie, yet fell out big time with his birth daddy Blaze, it was such a shock when we lost him, aged just 11 months
Blaze: Nosy, inquisitive, brave and fearless. A real "man-pig". So Sorry we weren't there when he went to the bridge (aged 18 months).
Oscar: Sweet, adorable, quiet, affectionate "Little O", just 9 months old when he died he had so much more to offer, because he was so placid we think he may have been the one piggy who we would have been able to bond with Dylan.
