Following a horrible week in which we lost two lovely boars, we now have just two boys left - Rupert and Jez. These are two big, feisty boars, who have never appeared to like each other much in the past, but now that there are just the two of them, I wanted to see if they could become friends.
Roo and his best friend Sam had been living in a shared cage in the kitchen, while Jez and Tom were side-by-side in the dining room. So first thing was to move Roo's cage in next to Jez's (sadly I don't have space for two cages in the kitchen). Initially there was a lot of peering over the bars and squeaking, but over a couple of days they got used to living next to each other.
On to shared laps....tension and burring the first time, but after a few sessions, they were settling down happily and even snuggling a bit.
Today I decided to try shared floor time. It was probably a bit soon really, but solitary floor time didn't seem to suit either of them - they just sat and looked miserable. So today I took the plunge :
- and it went really well. Of course, there was a LOT of mounting and chasing, lots of squeaking...but at least they were animated and active ;D and no raised hackles or teeth-chattering.
I'll let you know how it goes from here!
