Hello,

Today I noticed that my piggie Flor's left ear feels a bit rough to the touch. I'm not sure if it's a scab from a tussle (I haven't seen them really fight, though, just nip and chase), dried wee (Thistle projectile pees on anyone who lingers too close to her bum), or something else.

The reason I'm concerned is that the person I got her from told me yesterday that the two boars who are crested like Thistle and Clover ended up having a fungal infection. What would that look like? Could that be what is on Flor's ear?

:help:

p.s. I've my piggies for two weeks and have been rubbing her ears occasionally and this is the first I've noticed this.

Fungal ears can happen, but without seeing and handling a guinea pig, we are as wise as you. Is it just one ear?

One of my boys had a rough patch on his ear - he has black ears and it looked slightly 'crusty' and white....turned out to be fungal (ringworm?) and I was advised to treat it with Daktarin cream which seems to have worked so far. Can you take a photograph? Then I am sure someone more knowledgeable than me may be able to advise :)

Hi @Wiebke. Yes, this is a picture of the fungal patch on my piggy, Finn, in response to the initial post. This photograph was taken before treatment with Daktarin and it has now cleared. Thought it may be helpful for @Pigaroo to see if it is similar :)

My piggies are still squirmy when I handle them, but I will try to get a good picture when get home home from work today with the help of Mr. Pigaroo.

I'm so sad at the idea she might be sick!

As I'm figuring out whether it's fungal or not, should I be extra careful about handwashing between handling Flor and my other pets (2 other pigs, 1 cat, 1 dog)?

Thank you for you continued help, this is so stressful for me! I'll post a pic soon as I am able.

Hi @Pigaroo . Wiebke's link above gives really clear advice about handling etc. and how to avoid it spreading between other pets (and humans!). Until you are sure I would just assume that it is fungal and take all precautions suggested just in case. Try not to panic about it (as I did at first!)...it appears that my Finn's case has all cleared relatively easily and didn't spread to my other animals, or me! :)

I've gone ahead and made an appointment with the vet for tomorrow. I'll separate her from the other two girls in the meantime. :(

Hopefully whatever's going on is easily remedied!

Just left the vet. It's a bacterial infection. She'll need topical treatment for a couple of weeks and doesn't need to be quarantined, so she can heal around her buddies.

I'm feeling much better about the situation! Thanks for your help :)

Here's a picture. The crusty whiteness is under her ear as well. Poor little lady. She'll be all better soon!
